From the moment we arrived we knew this was going to be a special weekend. Staff are friendly and accommodating, service was generally good and game drives spectacular. It was a very dry time of season but the rangers did all they could to provide fantastic sighting which included the big four in two days. Food is great quality and endless so take loose clothes.
The pool is perfect for the middle of the day and being a small lodge one gets to make new friends easily. Also a reasonable drive from Jhb so that one gets to spend more time in the bush. Go as you will not be disappointed.

We spent 6 days at Thakadu River Camp at the start of August. The whole experience from start to finish was fantastic. Our guide, Duncan, was well informed and great at tracking down the animals. The staff at the lodge were incredibly friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic. The tent was luxurious and we loved watching elephants, monkeys and antelope from the balcony. The children especially enjoyed the swimming pool in between drives and we also found it a great place to relax. Thank you for a fabulous unforgettable experience. We would definitely recommend you and hope one day to visit again.

We stayed at the end of July 2016 for 3 days as a family of four. I decided on this lodge on the basis of trip advisor reviews and I was not disappointed ! this place is fabulous value for money. The staff is very competent super friendly and do their very best to help. Patience, our ranger, was fabulous, in particular with our kids. The food was really excellent, as many other people have said. Home made cakes in the morning and on drives, lovely home made food in the evening. the electric blanket was on in our bed and the kids had a comfortable sofa bed in the family tent.
Would highly recommend this camp. No big views from your tent, you overlook the river but you feel very much in a tree. We did not use the small pool, but it has a lovely location. the staff did their best to keep us warm at dinner even on cold winter nights.
We then stayed in another camp in Madikwe, twice as expensive as Thakadu, but Thakadu service, food and smiles were just as good!
don't change anything, you are a brilliant team at Thakadu.

The place really is great value when all things are considered. We found the food in particular and caring staff really made our stay so special. The drives were equally great. The rooms aren't luxury but they are very nicely done out and are very comfortable as well. Seems some rooms have a much better view from their balcony than others, as some have bush grown up right in front of them whereas others seemed to have nice river views. Yet they were the same price.

The lodge wasn't full when we stayed and we did question whether the experience might be diminished somewhat had it been. The main lodge and definitely the pool area don't seem to be large enough/designed to cope with the number of rooms they have. Still, we didn't experience this first hand so we're only speculating.

Overall a truly fantastic stay, which we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others and hope that we can experience again ourselves in the future.

Dear imjustthemessenger It was a pleasure hosting you. Except for clearing the pathways to the tents we try to leave the environment as natural as possible. Our friends the elephants are the only ones allowed to trim as they which. The Tents with better views in summer might not be as nice during the winter months. We are glad to see that you did enjoyed your stay and the Thakadu Team hope to receive you back as returning guests.

Brilliant food in Thakadu River Camp, our best in South Africa so far. Apart from that, also the tents are well equipped and we had a nice feeling in there. As mentioned in other reviews, higher numbers can be as far as 300-400 metres from reception, but it is nothing to worry about, on the contrary, it can be a nice walk after a wonderful dinner. Lodge´s terrace has much better river views compared to these you can get from your personal terraces, pool is just a small one, but can be refreshing on a hot day.
What we were not that excited about were the game drives. I can understand Madikwe is a private reserve which struggles to give its guests best possble game watching, but the artificial ZOO feeling is there when you stay in a que of vehicles and waiting for a short spotting of an unlucky distressed predator which can not hide ín the bushes as he would in National Park. You will probably see most of the Big Five in a couple of hours in there if this is what you like and unlike in many other game reserves around there is no hunting possible in Madikwe, but being an attractive animal can still be a tough call in there. That said, I must admit we were aware of this kind of game drives in there before we went and some of our sightings were spectacular.

Questions & answers about the pool

Answer from kpbarnhoorn
May 2022 |
1. August is probably the coldest month in SA. Although Madikwe has moderate winters, morning and evenings can be fairly chilly. Definitely long pants, beanies and scarfs recommended. On the vehicles ponchos are available, but dress warm. Layering recommended. Even in Africa 3 degrees is cold 2. Days cam be very pleasant. Spending time at pool on the deck; - yes. Swimming for the brave. 3. Small curious shop available. Payment in Rands. Cards accepted. Normal SA restaurant prices. 4. Re plugs; can 't say. SA 2 prong plugs similar to continental Europe.
