One of the best places that we have stayed at, in South Africa. Chantal is a gem and she was so welcoming and passionate about the farm, that her and her husband run. We stayed in Cooks House and could find no fault with anything. Private, beautifully decorated with stunning views. The pool at the back of the house was a welcome bonus. The dam has a beautiful setting and was loved by our two retrievers who accompanied us on their first road trip! This property is highly recommended as it is well run, breathtakingly beautiful and a picturesque 15 minutes drive to the town of Prince Albert. We will certainly return and share our memories with friends!

What an amazing spot !! Cannot stress enough how good was the feeling to discover this beautiful and well maintained farm, with their cottages and houses, all far enough from each other so you can feel completely secluded in the Karoo. We had the Paradhuys house, and we cannot say better than WOW.
The house is absolutely amazing. You wouldn't think that a such secluded old mansion would be so well decorated, very modern but still having this old-fashioned, or let's say vintage spirit. All equipped, very good mattresses, swimming pool and great view.
You should take a walk up the dam, through the olive trees, you won't be disappointed.
Only regret ? Not staying longer....

Also a warm thank you to Chantale who made our stay absolutely memorable ! We will be back !

Matt

We planned an escape to the Karoo for New Years 2016. We had our 3 dogs with us so needed a pet-friendly spot. We were 4 adults travelling.

Approaching the farm, you drive closer and closer to a mountain range that promises some respite from the heat.
The farm itself is stunning. It's 'farmy' but also has an feel of luxury and comfort.
We had reserved the Library cottage and were thrilled that it was the last cottage in the row of cottages! (they are totally adequately spaced but its just that 'extra' bit private ;)

The welcome onto the farm was great.. Chantelle was kind and thorough.
We could not believe the generosity with the gifts of olive oil, olives, milk, wine...
I wish we had bought some wine to take away, it was delicious!
Another surprise was that the cottage was serviced.. That made us very happy :)
All staff were super pleasant.
Chantelle really did go the extra mile prepping our Karoo lamb. We had a braai the one night and a potjie the next. The lamb is just YUM! Even when we asked for some herbs, Chantelle arrived with a fresh bunch of everything we could possibly need.

The cottage is gorgeous. Its quirky, well appointed, spacious and cool. The beds were incredibly comfy, the linen was wonderful, the bathrooms spacious and lavish.
We were absolutely cool enough with windows open at night and the fans on.. I love the fact that their is no AC.
We enjoyed that there was no TV but was pleasantly surprised that there was free Wifi... Not just on the farm, but in the cottage! (Mobile phone reception is poor)
The view out the living room windows was just stunning and the breeze from the mountain side, most welcome!
The kitchen facilities were fabulous. all great quality, everything in perfect working order.

The pool was amazing.. quite chilly! ;) but in that heat, a welcome break!

We LOVED the dams and decks.. especially the one far west on the farm. Wish we had had another day just to laze around there!

Stargazing out the back of the cottage on the steps sipping tea was how we spent New Years Eve and just LOVED it.

The surrounds were great, we really felt removed and private. The doggies LOVED it! I did keep them at my side at first but by the end they were scampering around the olive groves all on their own :) Chantelle warned us of snakes.. so one must just be a bit cautious. We had no problem with any 'unwanted' visitors ;)

Really a delightful spot. I have no doubt we will be back time and time again!

Thanks to all who made our stay so lovely!

My family and I stayed in one of the houses/cottages on the farm- in the newly renovated Opstaal house that is over 100 years old.

It is hard to imagine that in such a stunningly remote location and for such a good price, you can enjoy such luxury but Vrisch Gewagt got it more than right... and when I say luxury - I mean everything at your fingertips - gorgeous room décor, marble counter tops, every kitchen utensil you could imagine, SMEG fridges, Nespresso machines, self-standing baths to name a few! We were able to view the Main House and other cottages as well before new guests arrived and the standard is consistently top quality.

Then the best part, of course, is the outstanding setting - located on a 1600 hectre farm, we could take endless walks along the open paths and through the trees looking up at the vast Swartberg mountains or across the 16000 olive trees (!) split into sections over the expanse.

We explored the many dams, rivers and orchards dotted around and got to bask in the sun at the pools at Opstaal and the one overlooking this magical place. We were told it is one of the rare farms in the middle of the Karoo desert that has a constant stream of water - just another thing adding to how unique this place is. The silence, only disturbed by soothing nature, is something special to escape to. There really is nothing like it.

Chantal is just the best and catered to our every need and more. Upon request, she took the time to show us the olive presses - explaining the harvest process and different types of olive, and showed us the various animals at feeding time - Wendy the cow and her adorable son Max, the pigs, goats, sheep (we even got to feed the 2 tame ones). She delivered fresh milk when we asked and we were given the delicious farm-produced olive oil and olives - we just had to buy more to take home. Her and Stefan's passion for the farm is infectious.

Though the silence and remoteness is what we were after, we decided to venture out for a morning. The quaint town of Prince Albert is just a short 30min drive away where the locals welcomed us with open arms and we discovered the artsy soul of the place.

On a personal note, I have experienced nothing comparable to this stay to rejuvenate and refocus the mind and spirit. There is nothing like listening to the birds and insects coming alive at sunrise and the crackling fire under a spectacular sunset to soothe the soul. I can't wait to go back during olive harvest season!
