4 things I loved about my stay at Akademie Street Boutique Hotel:
1.) THE ACCOMMODATIONS - it is clear that decorating the rooms was a labor of love. Its just so nice to spend time in your room here. They also have a private pool and a wood burning hot tub. The refrigerator is stocked with free alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The shower is big and has great water pressure. The bed is very comfortable. They have bikes you can borrow. And the common areas of the hotel are immaculate.
2.) THE LOCATION - its situated in a safe quiet neighborhood and is a short easy walk away from all of the restaurants and shops. We walked each day to the wine tram. If you’re driving, there is easy designated parking at the facility.
3.) THE FOOD AND DRINKS - the breakfasts are epic! Great coffee, omelettes, eggs, breads, yoghurts, and fruits. Every night they put out wine, whiskey, and other beverages for the firsts to enjoy by the fire both before dinner time and after dinner time.
4.) THE PEOPLE - the hotel is run by the most friendly, happy, caring people who clearly love what they do. The service is impeccable without being overbearing at all. You get personalized, warm, genuine service from the moment you arrive.
This place is bulletproof. Book this hotel with total confidence. 5 Stars.
We only spent one night there but what a memorable experience. A warm welcome by Declan to the most eclectic gorgeous home you can imagine starts off this adventure. It is hard to imagine anything more special than this Boutique hotel where every single wish and whim is catered for. At the ploo on the loungers there are even sun hats set out. The rooms are all different, we were in Twyfeling A and could walk out to the pool. The small touches that make a room one you will remember are all there, from the stoked bar fridge to the light in the bathroom and excellent bedside lighting. The gorgeous Conservatory where the breakfast is served also welcomes you to splendid wines before dinner as well as a night cap before a blazing fire in the huge grate, when you return from dinner. The breakfast defies description . The fruit, smoothie, cereals are a meal in themselves and is then followed by a most delicious selection of hot dishes. No wonder this was voted the best Boutique hotel in the world
We saw the gorgeous autumn colours in the vineyard of Franschhoek and wandered the streets of this fascinating town. We will be back, Declan
My wife and I recently spent a wonderful weekend at the Akademie Street Boutique Hotel. We had decided to go to Franschoek to relax and enjoy the comfort advertised by the hotel. We were NOT disappointed.
From the minute we arrived, we were pampered and treated to every comfort imaginable by Declan and his team. There is nothing that is too much to ask for.
The whole property is beautifully designed, tastefully furnished and maintained in pristine condition. The lovely pool area with direct access from our room was a great pleasure.
The rooms are very comfortable and equipped with Hi speed Wi-Fi, TV, mini bar, AC, fans and just about anything else that you might require to make you stay comfortable.
The hotel is located a short walk from Huguenot Street, the main drag where you you can find a choice of restaurant offering fine dining and also most cuisines that you you may fancy.
Franschoek has a great vibe and whether you want to visit the multitude of shops or have a glass of wine and people watch, it is a great place to be.
A big thank you to the entire team at Akademie who who worked tirelessly and smilingly to make our stay a memorable one.
We will definitely be back.
My fourth stay at Akademie Street was in their Uitsig suite, which is located upstairs and has wonderful views of the surrounding mountains from both the front door, the bathtub, and the private balcony (complete with wood-fried hot tub) at the back.
I think this may be my favourite room!
It only has access to the main pool and not an additional more private pool (like the 3 cottages on the property) but in these cooler months, that suited me just fine. A bathtub and wood-fired hot tub were all I needed. Every suite has a fireplace too.
On food: I went out for dinner on the first night (to Protégé which is in walking distance) but loved my room so much that I decided to stay in on the second and enjoyed some takeaway in bed while watching TV before having a long bath. Bliss! Akademie's breakfast is always excellent (as were the treats in the mini bar) and complimentary chocolate in the suite.
The changing seasons and the light it brings, in this part of the Western Cape, is particularly special. Especially in the mornings!
I am not even sure where to begin to describe the fine attention to detail at Akademie. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel welcome and special. Declan and his team cater to your every need and we were truly spoiled throughout our stay.
I will start with our room. After being shown to our room in the main house, we noticed there was a smart phone plugged in next to the bed. We thought perhaps the person who made up our room had left it by accident, so we went to return it to Declan. As it turns out, the phone is provided to guests for their use during their stay and is pre-programmed with numbers that guests might want/need. What an incredibly thoughtful gesture for international travelers who might not have a South African SIM card!
The room is beautifully decorated and has the most amazing bed! It is extra-large, super comfy and just totally luxurious. You can practically get lost in it! The sheets are handmade (learned this by chatting with Declan) of the finest cotton.
There is a lovely little sitting area perfect for enjoying a cocktail from the fully stocked mini-bar.....including rum, gin, vodka, and Amarula (a decadent creamy South African liqueur made from the marula fruit) plus mixers, water, and delicious snacks.....sweet and savory. And since Declan knew it was my birthday, there was a special bottle of MCC (Méthode Cap Classique .... a South African term for a sparkling wine made exactly the same way Champagne is made) in our fridge! There is also a desk area complete with a phonograph/gramophone for music! And though we did not need to use it, there is also a wood burning stove in the room.
The bathroom has a gorgeous free standing tub, his and her sinks, and a separate spacious walk in shower....with room for 2! There is a side door that opens to a beautiful sparkling pool and toasty hot jacuzzi which we took advantage of each day of our stay. Around the pool are upscale loungers and, on each lounger, sits a Turkish towel, a pool towel, and a sun hat! Again, nothing is left to chance at Akademie.
The grounds are just beautiful and well maintained. Declan's team is always seen around the hotel making sure everything is perfect, inside, and out. And speaking of the great team at Akademie, we parked directly under a tree on the street and birds overhead had made a mess on the roof, window, and side of our car. My husband went inside to find something to clean it off, but Declan would not hear of it. One of his team came out with a bucket of water and a cleaning cloth and took care of it for us!
A quick stroll from our room is "Orangerie" where breakfast was served each morning and drinks were provided before and after dinner. Breakfast was probably the best we have had at a boutique hotel or B and B. Smoothies, fruit platters with a huge assortment of local fresh fruits, and pastries started us off and that was followed by a piping hot made-to-order breakfast.
At night, Orangerie transforms into a lovely, warm, comfortable cocktail reception area complete with a crackling fire for before or after dinner....or both! Several varieties of wine, MCC and beer were offered for self-service. A perfect ending to each day!
Throughout the hotel there are striking pieces of art and it seems there is something to catch your eye at every turn.
Akademie is located in a lovely and peaceful residential neighborhood but it's only a quick walk to the main street which is lined with great restaurants and shops.
It was just an absolutely wonderful stay and when asked if there was anything that could have made our stay better, the answer was a resounding "no!" Everything was perfect and we will definitely be back later in the year for our anniversary.
