We had the most amazing experience at River Bend Lodge. I only wish we could have stayed longer. The staff went out of their way to make my two kids (ages 2 & 4) feel comfortable and entertained. Babysitting was arranged for the early game drives, the kids were able to walk with the giraffes, and the staff let my kids make and decorate over 2 dozen animal shaped cookies. My husband and I were treated like royalty - the food and wine were delicious and constant, and my husband enjoyed a great massage.

On the game drives, we saw elephants playing in the watering hole, lions right after a kill, and tons of zebra, ostrich, warthog, etc. Wonderful experience. Would definitely do again.

My fiancé and I have just returned from a 3 night break at River Bend. It was the finale of our trip to SA and also my birthday. The lodge is beautiful - rooms are gorgeous. We had booked the honeymoon suite - well worth it for a private garden and pool and an outside shower option! This was our first safari and we were so impressed - over in the main Addo park you could be in large vehicles and have 20/30 people viewing the same lion.

Not so here as there's a limited number of guests and vehicles and as you explore off road we felt we got a unique, special and personal experience. Our guide Elias was extremely knowledgable and passionate about the animals and the park. We saw plenty / lions, elephants, buffalo, zebra, rhinoceros, eland, kudo, and lots of warthogs. We liked the fact we were in a national park as opposed to a private reserve - but the lodge provided a very relaxed and intimate place to stay.

We found the staff attentive, the service was great and we really enjoyed all the food. For my birthday I had a huge cake and bubbles all laid on with fuss and friendly warm service.

I also can recommend the beauty treatments - fabulous massage. We also met Michael and did the introduction to photography course and a fun wine tasting.

Overall I would strongly recommend as if you take a closer look at what you are getting and where this is a magical and unique experience.

We plan to return....

If yoiu are planning a Safari with kids and you want it to be near the Garden Route, then look no further. We opted for the Garden Route, as it is Malaria free. Riverbend was then recommended by the travel agent and i could not thank them more. The two interconnecting rooms were huge and utterly comfortable. Beds and Matrasses were super comfy, shower very good, Wireless worked very well througout the lodge. The Lodges biggest asset is the private concession of Land next to Addo park, you see no other Cars appart from the few of the Lodge, (4 cars maximum) and that is on 14.000 hectares of land, so it made us feel its only us and nature. We loved our superbly experienced ranger Darlington (thanks for everything) who gave us so many interesting game sightings and information about the bush and the animals that live there. Unforgettable is our encounter with 100 elephants incl Babies, where it was only our car and elephants all around us, that was magical! Big difference to Addo park is the privacy of the place. In addo you even find real streets and if there is a nice sighting, there will be some cars watching too, so it looses its magic. We saw a buffalo, three lions, a rhino and heaps of zebras, warthogs, plus the 100 elephants. Darlington woke us every morning at 05.30 with a warm smile and hot tea and cookies. He was wonderful with our kids, too.
Dinner is nice and breakfast too.
The pool area is relaxing and the gardens are so well kept and green.
Our massage with Ina Lize was abolutely devine, one of the best we ever had, thank you!
Will come back!

It was the 4th time my husband Rudi and I stayed some nights at Riverbend Lodge in Addo Elephant Park. It is always amazing to see the efforts all members of the staff take to make you feel better than at home :-). Upon arrival, after a warm welcome by Stefanie and Tariro, Field Guide Darlington immediately drove me to the main shop at the gate of Addo Elephant Park because my suitcase went missing on the airport and had not turned up after 4 days, so I could buy some safari-clothing over there and felt much better afterwards. Darlington's game drives are always good, no matter what you see during the drive. It's not only the big five, but birds, insects, plants, trees,.... He knows it all! We always end up very close to the elephants, animals I love so much and make me feel sad when I read about the culling and poaching of those magnificent pachyderms. But of course we saw lion, black rhino, buffalo, lots of zebra, kudu, warthogs, impala, red hartebeest, eland, black-backed jackal, yellow mongoose, ostrich, cranes, ...
Being vegetarians we also like the chef's cuisine and the waiters Moses, Lyanda, Princess and Princess look upon you during the nice meals (breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner).
The rooms are splendid, spacious and cosy. A plunge in the swimming pool cools you down after a wonderful morning game drive.
We enjoyed a massage by Ina-Lize and loved the gentle way Sarah was always around making sure everything was ok. Chatting with Stefanie is always nice, because she also has a lot of knowledge about wildlife and nature. It was certainly not the last time we stayed there.

We just came back from visiting South Africa and spend a couple of nights at River Bend. This place is small with just 8 rooms so at most there would only be 16 people. As the last reviewer said, it has a boutique feel to it and everyone is personable and service oriented. We had four rides were able to see lions, black rhino, elephants, giraffes, kudu. We did not go to the public side of Addo Elephant park as River Bend side has most of the animals you want to see. Another important info is that their Landrovers seat just 6 people so no middle seats! Seeing these elephants up close and personal was an incredible experience. The food was excellent as well, all high end restaurant style. My wife also got a massage and she enjoyed the experience. If you are going to Addo for game viewing, this is the place to be. It was fantastic!
