I am going to describe my experience at the Super 8 by Wyndham Manchester Airport on Saturday, August 17th, in hopes that nothing like it happens to anyone else. Everyone I tell is shocked, they didn’t think things like this could happen, but they can, at least at the Super 8 in Manchester.
Arriving at almost midnight, I was checked in offhandedly by the lady at the counter. I got my key card and went up to the 3rd floor to my room. I tried the door a few times and the key card didn’t work. That’s normal. But after I tried a few times, I heard a very angry male voice yelling at me from the other side of the door. When I returned downstairs, the staff appeared nonplussed. “Huh, our records show there’s nobody in there.” They checked the files, shrugged, and gave me the key to another room.
Tired, I went to the room. This time the key worked fine. I entered the room, dragged in my suitcase, and tried to figure out where the light switch was. Suddenly there is an old woman in her underwear in front of me, screaming, “GET OUT!!!” She was understandably terrified. I jumped backwards out of the room, so fast my luggage was left behind.
I returned to the front desk. It had been a long day. I felt terrible that I had inadvertently terrorized an old woman in a handicapped room. This time I asked the staff to retrieve my luggage and fix the situation. Even now, they acted like they couldn’t really care less. They retrieved my luggage and, for the third time, got me a room. This time they brought me there and explained someone must have given the old woman the wrong key card. Not reassuring!
The room was fine. Clean and correct. But -- predictably, the first thing I did was check the locks. The important part of my story is: there are no deadbolts at the Super 8 by Wyndham in Manchester. You have no real security. There is no way to secure your door from the inside. Although the lobby looks like a bus terminal, the room is fine, but -- this hotel is not a safe or a secure place to stay and must be avoided. This is no place for you or your loved ones.
