My stay in this beautiful guesthouse was probably longer than the norm, being 10 days, so I had ample time to take in my surroundings and comforts. I was made to feel extremely welcome by owners Peter and Elsa Blythe and my suite was beautifully furnished with high end antique armoire and dresser and matching Queen size bed. A built in bar supplied with bar fridge, complimentary tea and coffee as well as inexpensively-pried snacks and drinks completed the inventory. A mini safe was available in the room as well. The bathroom with shower and bath was supplied with large, fluffy towels and cleaned thoroughly daily. The bed linen was changed daily. Stringent security was carefully monitored and my hire car was kept safe and clean under car ports.
The dining room was beautifully decorated with choice framed paintings and furniture. A daily selection of finely-chopped fruit, yoghurt and choice of cereals and juices started one on a sumptuous breakfast. Elsa cooked a hot breakfast to order - eggs, toast, bacon, sausages and fried tomato. Some days I had variations like hot fish cakes or savoury mince on toast (a South African favourite! Try it!). Filter coffee, tea selection and rusks were abundant on the sideboard. One did not need to have lunch. Although I did not avail myself of this facility, dinner was available to order if desired. Laundry was done crisply and quickly overnight at R30 a time. The pool and gardens, the bricked walkways and covered patio made for serene and enjoyable outdoor areas to just relax and have a smoke if so desired - rattan armchairs scattered about made this comfortable. Peter was always in attendance at meals and chatted with his guests which completed the home-from-home experience. Many of his guests are frequent returnees and I will be the same.
The location in the quiet suburb of Northcliff is very convenient for the major motorways. On nearby Beyers Naude Drive are major retailer outlets like Cresta Shopping Centre and w2onderful restaurants including my all-time favourite, the Thundergun. Phillip Joubert, Melbourne.
