This was my first time to the Ocean Beach Resort & Spa. It came highly recommended by a friend who has been visiting the venue from Switzerland for the last 5 years. I haven't spent much time in Malindi and was excited to check it out.
My friend and I came for the day - to enjoy lunch, dinner and a Spa package, right at the start of the Easter holiday. We enjoyed some superb food, and honestly the Prosecco goes down quite well when accompanied by the ocean breeze flowing in from the wide panoramic beach views. It's very serene.
After lunch and a little work, I went to the Spa. Unfortunately my Spa experience was not up to par with the food quality and service. For a five star hotel, it was quite disappointing. I ordered a manicure & pedicure expecting a treatment as luxurious as advertised but receiving something truly basic. Where the food had been excellent and the food staff very friendly and professional, the two Spa attendants seemed eager to rush through my services as they were finishing up services with my friend.
To explain further - my manicure and pedicure was done haphazardly outside by the pool. I sat awkwardly on a lounge chair as the services were hurriedly done. There were no basins of hot water to dip my hands in, nor was there a wash down or scrub to exfoliate (as is traditionally done). My hands were simply wiped down with a damp cloth, clipped, filed and painted. My feet were clipped, washed, scrubbed and painted but the cuticles were cut painfully close and (again), I had to sit awkwardly on a lounge chair as the service was being done.
The Spa experience was odd, and very expensive for the poor quality. I shared the experience with my friend and Fredrick - the manager on call. Both agreed that my experience wasn't up to the hotel standards and Fredrick offered a redo of the service (by the same two ladies on the next day).
Unfortunately we were leaving for Watamu the following day and Fredrick's offer would not work with our planning. I would have preferred a refund as I could have done a better job for myself. Additionally, once bitten twice shy!
If you get a chance to go, please don't miss this hidden gem. Enjoy the food, the views, and the beach but please save your mani/pedi money for drinks instead.
