This fantastic old house was our comfort and refuge during our five day stay in Cartagena. Our large, homey room had garden and pool views, and cleverly included glass doors to keep in the very welcome A/C. The bathroom had a shower open to the sky and bugainvillea blooms of the garden, with concrete columns holding lush ferns... Fabulous funk at its finest.
The ambience is pure Caribbean, and even those of us with limited writing skills might be inspired to turn out a hundred years of solitude!
Best breakfast in all of our weeks in Columbia, great ladies in the kitchen serving us like family.
And the pool. Small but absolutely refreshing and satisfying after walking Cartagena in the heat. Absolutely recommended.
Sadly we only discovered the real issue with Casa Del Cabrero in the last two nights of our stay. But there are also the following issues:
-the general dirtiness of the place, even though you have access to a kitchen (which you don't know about unless you ask) if you want to use a glass you have to wash it again as there are years of dirt accumulated.
-The pool area could be nice but the seating around is dirty and ugly.
-The consistent absence and near horizontal attitude of the so-called 'manager-Elmar' really? Who owns this place? they should be ashamed of the extreme lack of service. What does this kid do except play on his phone all day?
-No one to meet guests, albeit the cleaning lady and night boy are friendly when they answer the door they provide no information when they greet you and there is no information in the rooms.
-There was limited hot water (about a minute of scalding water before it turned cool).
-Sporadic cleaning of the room and definitely not on a Sunday.
-Upon eventually asking to meet the 'manager' well into our second day we asked him lots of questions and finally found out when breakfast was 8.30-11 (totally different information than we were give when asking the night man) and he told us that we could get it earlier if we asked. When we did order for one day earlier there was no one around at all even though he claimed he had told the night man. We asked for our bill to be delivered to the room the night before, Elmar agreed but yet again nothing happened. Anything we agreed with him never happened.
We were stupid enough to have booked for a week and changed rooms after day one as the roof room was very dark, dingy and seemed dirty.
We moved to a bigger room downstairs which was okay except for cold showers and generally tired appearance. We had to clean dusty shelves and surfaces with a wet cloth first as unfortunately it was warranted! On night 6 however we had a horrible shock when we found loads of bedbugs in both pillows and on our necks. We woke the night man and he helped us changed all the sheets and pillows and then we eventually managed to fall asleep. We told the 'manager' in Spanish and English who seemed very relaxed by the issue and said he would make sure the room was cleaned again. We decided not to leave as we only had one night left and had plans for that day. The night after, again we awoke in the night at 2am to some albeit fewer bugs on the pillow to the point that I just couldn't sleep and stayed up reading away from the bed the rest of the night.
We explained the issue the next day and the manager just brought us the full bill. We refused to pay all of it and asked for the two nights back which we thought was a minimum considering the extent of the issue. The 'manager' disagreed saying the cleaners had cleaned the room and we had breakfast!! Funny enough the morning of the problem we did not have breakfast at the Casa and also did not have breakfast the morning we had asked for an early one. As for cleaning the rooms, that is debatable and definitely does not happen on Sundays and we had to request it other days. After a lot of arguing he proceeded to eventually give us one nights discount and locked all the doors in case we did a runner! What a joke. He even tried to charge us for the laundering of our nightwear which we only laundered due to the bed bug problem! He just doesn't seem to understand the gravity of the problem. If the place has bed bugs then it cannot be ignored.
This accommodation should be fumigated throughout, it hasn't had a decent clean in years. Everywhere you go it just looks dirty. Well now they have a bed bug problem (apparently never reported before)-here it is in black and white. Avoid Avoid Avoid. As for the 'manager', really? What is the point?
Such a shame as this accommodation has potential to be a nice place close to the city walls. Our advice is please don't stay here, the hassle, bugs, dirt and lack of information are really not worth it.
Hotel was quiet and located in a beautiful old colonial building set in a small peaceful garden with a plunge pool which was great to cool off in. Only 5 minutes from the walled city, it was perfectly located.
Pros: gorgeous and quiet room, clean bathroom, great location and good breakfast.
Cons: the room had air conditioning but it didn't really work and our balcony looked out onto the neighbour's wall. As the atmosphere is more of a home than a hotel, we couldn't get a beer or any soft drinks at all which would have been beneficial! There is however a shop down the road which you can use. Would stay again.
