1. Location: main advantage of the hotel. Right at the beach and close to Dadonghai city centre. Extra plus is that the hotel has their own beach chairs with small lockers to safely store your valuables.
2. Room: looks like your grandparents bedroom where everything (apart from the tv) seems to date back from the late 80'ies and has not been renovated every since. Bed Matrasse so incredibly hard that it hurts your back. Walls very thin so you can hear your neighbors conversation.
3. Breakfast buffet: Chinese buffet with very few western options.
4. Service: apart from one unfriendly intern at the lobby, the rest of the staff was friendly and attentive. But their English is not that good so being able to speak Chinese is an advantage.
In summary, Sanya Pearl River Garden hotel is an average hotel with a good location. It could have the potential to be an amazing hotel if they would do major renovations to the rooms. The hotel is good and affordable option if you are planning to just stay for 2 days, want to be close to the beach and do not really care about the room.
The location is very good if you are interest in a bit crowded place, the hotel location is at the bay which is one the most papular and public beaches in Sanya. I would not suggest to go there during Chinese public holiday as you may be annoyed by the crowed but in different time period is a good choice.
The advantages of this hotel is that it is much cheaper than other hotels in the area and it has own beach part where they provide beds and locker for free and a guard who is looking after your belonging and also does not let anyone else use the hotel beds if they are not hotel guest. This is a good point because at the beach you need to rent those beds for 100RMB per day which is not advisable plus sometimes you do not want to sit at the beach the whole time so you will end up for paying 100RMB for maybe couple of hours.
The other advantage is the area, basically there is everything in that area, there is a food court (2min walking) which opens around 5pm till late midnight with daily live music (same Philippine band for last 2 past years) (thank god they play different songs) and have 100 different types of seafood (bbq...) . we mainly spent our dinners at the food court which was very fun specially.
On the other hand there is a mall (2min walking) with imported products (Quite pricey) but you can find whatever you need. for example one day we felt like eating a bit more western so we went there bought bread, salami ... and made our own sandwich which is a good meal in China ;).
The big disadvantage is the ROOM. its old and smells,(you get used to it fast though). their rooms have a tendency to smell bit probably because of Air conditioning and also the hotel age (too old, but not boutique), but we found a solution for it but it depends on season you are going. In the hotel garden there are some beautiful white flowers with an amazing smell. we took some of those flowers (with respect to the flower but we had no other option) and put in our room and that was the end to the bad smell.
Overal experience in short,
If you are with kids > Not suitable at all.
single> perfect, there are so many other travellers in the area, so for sure you will have fun.
couple> it depends, need quite place to spend some romancing time > NO
couple> you want have fun and some excitement, water sports, eat and drink till morning > Yes
expecting high quality > NO
Breakfast> NO, super chinese and cold
Service> Okay (chinese standard) if you don't speak chinese then you have problem.
Stayed one night before going to a five star.
Great location with direct beach access
It's a dated, old hotel with a bit of a musty smell, yet the sea view room is pretty good, great view. A bit small but totally doable.
Seafood bbq not too bad either!
Service very good
Offers tcm massages with acupuncture
We arrived on our first trip to the real China. We had been to Hong Kong many times before. Fortunately we had the address of the hotel written in Chinese to give to the Taxi driver. You should not pay more than 55 Yuan for the trip from the Airport to this hotel. We arrived in the lobby of the hotel to find that our room on I think it was to be the 8th floor was not available (Unfortunately all this became very difficult because no one really could communicate in English.)
After a while Cherry the assistant manager attended to us with very limited English. After the dust settled we accepted a room on the 6th floor facing the ocean (only way to go) We had a four day reservation and extended it to ten. I guess that tells you something. We were delighted and may return again. No problem with the room it was quite nice.
Now the other stuff.
There is an ATM in the lobby and it works
There a great international super market on the 5th floor of a building within 200 metres just around the corner. We went there looking for yogurt and I could not believe my eyes when I actually found the yogurt that my wife buys in Melbourne in their fridges and lots of other goodies. Needless to say we went there regularly.
The hotel is a bit noisy at night as it's close to lots of entertainment. The beach is super close and the hotel has a reserved area with loungers for their guests as well there is a board walk along the beach that stretches for about 500 metre with lots of eateries.
There were lots of Russians in the area and at our Hotel and they can be very pushy.
Breakfast is interesting as it mainly caters for the local population. They had fried eggs except they fried them until they were dead. I had to show them how I would like them everyday as there was a new cook each day. No problem they were very obliging and did them just right, over easy or sunny side up. I tried the Congee as I really like that dish but it was rubbish.
There is an Ethnic Minority Village about an hour away which we think is worth a visit.
We went to a tourist office near by. No English was spoken but we took a map as we had found out where the village was and showed them the map and it all fell into place.
Worked like a treat.
The Dolphin Bar which is just about 300 metres away is a place for good food and drink and great value and a new steak house called City Beef Steak had just opened and the meat was terrific. On the first night thought we were over charged which we sort and the second time a 490 gram steak was about 200 gram so that was sad.
This was my second stay with my family. Previously, I stayed in January 2012. This time, one year later, in March 2013. In general, we like the hotel. The nicest thing of the hotel is that seaview rooms have excellent views. The hotel is almost at the beach and few walks away. I also like an escalator that connects the second floor to the beach. The lobby interior settings are quite nice especially the background wall of the front desk is so cool. Hotel air conditioning system works so well that it feels replenishing enough when you enter the hotel entrance after walking in the street. The breakfast has good varieties and tasty. The important thing is you have to be there before 10:00 am before lots of hotel guests finish nice breakfast. Hotel staff is very friendly and eventhough their knowledge of English is limited they try to help. There is a Summer Mall, decent department store with local and international brands just around the corner. If you want western food, the Pizza Hut is located in the Summer Mall. Now what were issues that the hotel might pay attention or improve it to attract more tourists? 1) Third floor seaview rooms next to the pool is not advisable. When you open balcony, you see bunch of hotel guests using pools and chatting loudly intervening your privacy. Throughout the third floor, it feels dumpish maybe due to the pool is located in this level. Therefore we changed our rooms from third floor to sixth. 2) In room dining service was not good enough. The food choices are limited and the tasted bad in particular if you order it late evening. 3) European restaurant in the hotel needs to be improved in terms of the service and taste. In general I evaluate the hotel as good.
