It was beautiful, language barrier made it a little hard to speak with staff however, that's not their fault & they tried their best to understand and help. Even the staff at elevator door were polite! The mattress and pillows were SO COMFY! The room and everywhere around the hotel was clean, food good, good gym, nice pool etc. It's amazing value for money(about $150aud for nice room and buffet breakfast). I had to arrange a hotel transfer for midnight as I was nervous getting in a taxi alone. I arranged it with about 4 hours notice, my plane was an hour late and they didn't charge more or get annoyed. Transfer was expensive but beautiful car and friendly service. I genuinely cant think of anything bad to say about my experience.
Stayed here with a group of 16 children for a hockey tournament. Hotel was clean, had great amenities and overall was a pleasant stay. Pool was still closed, and the long trip across to the neighbor hotel was a pain, and we only made it once. Gym facilities are dated and the gym is very warm, making hard to get in a good workout.
Hotel bar prices were very high, and eventually we just started buying our own drinks and enjoying in our rooms.
Hotel staff were friendly, and accommodating to the children. Gardens around the hotel are very nice, and if kept up, could be spectacular. Overall a good stay for our group and we would return.
After reading the reviews we were a bit afraid of what we'd find. Our tour booked us here and we even wrote them asking if perhaps they should reconsider. But this was the biggest surprise of our trip. The hotel was very nice. Yes the rooms weren't modern and trendy like at our hotel in Shanghai. But the Great Wall Hotel was clean, the staff was very attentive and largely spoke enough English for us to get by. My husband needed ice nightly for a recent knee surgery and it was delivered minutes after calling down to the front desk. I loved the breakfast. And it was so near so many things. The area is filled with embassies and we felt very safe walking around even at night since there were guards in front of all the embassies. We found an amazing dumpling restaurant a couple of blocks from the hotel, and an equally amazing brewpub where they were brewing western-style microbrews on-site. Overall, considering the hotel itself - comfort, cleanliness, amenities - plus location plus breakfast, I have to say this was our favorite of all the hotels we stayed at in China. It isn't a Westin or a Four Seasons - if that is what you want, don't stay here. But if you want an economical hotel near shops and restaurants/bars in a nice area with clean and comfortable rooms and attentive staff, this hotel checks all the boxes. Oh and they are renovating the pool as it was unavailable at the time we went. But the gym was available if one is so inclined.
Stayed here for 3 nights at the recommendation of a local friend. The lobby looks nice although I heard it’s an old hotel. The room is spacious but the bedsheets needs a change (looks worn out and torn). Toilet and bathroom together in 1. Besides being located near foreign embassies and office towers, there isn’t much around. There is a Cantonese restaurant opposite the hotel named Lucky 7 Restaurant which serves affordable cooked dishes and dim sum which is quite yummy (we had breakfast and lunch there). Behind the hotel has 2 hotpot restaurants and some VIP clubs. A walk to the nearest mall (about 500 metres away) named Yansha Youyi Shopping Centre which is also where the closest subway station: LiangMaQiao is located. Agriculture Exhibition Center is the other subway station nearby. Connected to the hotel is a Convention centre even though the hotel itself has ballrooms. The hotel has a Business Centre, beauty salon, gym facilities and sauna. The swimming pool was closed due to maintenance work (closed till 31 Dec 2018). The hotel serves breakfast at Silk Road Trattoria, drinks at Atrium Bar, sandwiches and pastries and coffee at Lobby Lounge, Chinese restaurant on the 21st floor (which opens post 12noon). Wifi works well in room and in lobby. Recommended to stay for business travellers. If you are looking for shopping then this hotel will not serve your purpose.
I read very mixed reviews before staying at this hotel but in all honesty my wife and I thought the hotel was good, not great by any means but it got the job done. Good location, clean, food alright, staff ok. Pool and gym were ok, but quite dated and not a place to really sit and relax.
If you’re visiting Beijing to explore then this hotel is perfect, close to the subway, close (ish) to the airport and comfortable rooms with good AC and nice area. We were one of the few international tourists staying at the hotel and it looked like it catered for more local tourists as English among staff was not widely spoken, but thanks to google translate we got through without any issues. Adapt to the local culture, food and ways of doing things in China and you will have a great experience staying here. Fight the differences to western life and you won’t enjoy yourself.
