Stayed here two times in june 2017. The first time we camped for two nights and after a week we returned and slept in a dorm for one night. The overall experience is ok, when we stayed here at first we were the only guests, so the place felt rather empty and the staff didn't really bother with us, however they were friendly when we wanted anything. So it is quite a difference from it's "cousin" Lusaka Backpackers.

For us the best thing was probably the location, it is walking distance from one of the biggest malls in Lusaka (15min) and a bit more far away from the intercity bus terminus (30min).
There is a basic kitchen facility which we used to cook our own meals. Not very clean but alright. The wifi is one of the best we had during our 2,5 month stay in East- and Southern Africa.
The dorms are fine but nothing extraordinary, just a room full of beds.
Conclusively it is a good place to stay at if you are just travelling through Lusaka as we did, if I would spend more time in Lusaka I think that I would choose another place.

I stayed here a for a couple nights at a time on and off through the month of January. I stayed in my tent, where we paid $5 per person per night. The compound felt safe, and the staff were friendly and helpful. You can walk to Manda Hill mall, though it is a little bit of a hike. There was a storage room to keep our stuff while we were out during the day, and when it rained the staff was kind enough to move our stuff inside. All in all, a good place, only downside was with the load shedding that is affecting Zambia electricity was on probably less than half of the time, but that isn't the hostel's fault, and there were signs saying they were working on being able to have power during load shedding hours.

There's a gushing review about this place on one of the Zambia travel forums but I am sorry to say it fell well below the pass mark in our opinion! The place itself is in a good location, walking distance to Manda Hill Mall & other cafes & restaurants. It's also in a beautiful big corner plot that could be AMAZING if it had some money & time spent on it. The backpackers itself is in a big, old, poky house. The decor is pretty dowdy and although it is clean, there is chipped & peeling paint in most communal areas, giving it an air of neglect. We stayed in the double room & didn't see the dorms. The room was incredibly basic - no fan, a thin, much-slept on mattress (when lying down we were lying in the indentation of the previous person's body shape which is imprinted in the cheap foam), on a concrete base, with chipped, cracked concrete floor. The bathroom was a shocker! Absolutely huge but desperately in need of a new shower curtain, a good paint and a new toilet. The dirty window was propped open by a stick! We reported that the toilet wasn't flushing on day 2 of our 4 day stay, and nothing was done to fix it so we had to take the lid off to physically pull up the cistern every time we wanted to flush it. There was a broken part which looked quite simple to fix with wire as a temporary measure, but no one came to mend it. The towels were threadbare and thin. Not good enough for $45! We didn't cook but we did look for coffee in the camp kitchen which is apparently freely available - none to be found. The kitchen is very basic with one tap. There were a few fridges & I have seen worse on my travels in terms of cleanliness. Overall, Wanderers made us feel pretty depressed that a backpackers that could be so good was so uncared-for. We have since stayed in other types of accommodation in Lusaka, including Air BnB & hotels. For a good, solid option at this price I would opt for Kalulu Backpackers (as another reviewer mentioned) on Broad Rd.

We stayed here for two nights in the family room when their sister property, Lusaka Backpackers, was full.

The property has a bar and kitchen. Walking distance to two shopping centers, Manda Hill and Arcades, with grocery stores, restaurants, and shops.

The room was comfortable with windows and mosquito nets.

A downside is the random power cuts - 6-10 pm on night, 2-8 pm another, 8 am the next day. The property provides solar lanterns and candles which helps.

The shower was hot with great water pressure- best shower in Africa in 3 weeks of backpacking!!

Questions & answers about the rooms

Hi, Sorry we missed your email, it hasn't come through to us. Let me try to answer all your questions :) I'm not sure exactly what you mean by prebook the ala cartes. If you mean can you by food, yes you can at our other hostel nearby where we have a full menu with weekly specials. We don't have fridges in the rooms but there are fridges available to you in the shared guest kitchen. We have single or double beds. We are within walking distance of Manda Hill shopping Centre. I'm not sure what an adult area is but it sounds a bit scary, could you give me more details before I answer that one. Please try the email again, we haven't had an issue with other emails. Hope that helps a bit Andy
