Stayed two nights in Jan, travelling with dog between Cape town and KZN. The Shire is perfect if you are looking for beautiful comfy accom in a peaceful setting. We love the direct access to the variety of marked trails varying from 5 to 19 km in the Kologha Forest, the view from the deck, room and bed make you feel like you are in the indigenous forest and finally the outside shower that is actuallyin the forest! Signal is patchy but OK. Bed very comfortable. Everything you need in the kitchen for self-catering and of course braaiing. Very peaceful and we will be back again
it is a open-plan chalet with a stylish en suite bathroom, with fully equipped kitchenette .
have a braai
you my abseil, rock climbing, canoeing, archery, fishing, hiking and arts and crafts meander..
My husband and I spent our "mini-moon" at The Shire. The cabins are stunningly crafted, warm and cosy with real attention to detail. Each cabin has a small kitchen, living area, bedroom, shower room and deck out the front. We stayed in one of the cabins right on the river which even had an outdoor shower.
There are great forest walks in the area with routes right from the cabins and if you need to pop into Stutterheim for supplies it's only about a 10-15 minute drive.
The lodge is owner run and Rob went out of his way to get us into the riverside cottage on a busy long weekend. He also delivered fresh oranges from the orchard one morning!
A really perfect weekend getaway - we will be back in the future.
I stayed here 3 years ago and again in May 2015 while doing botanical tours of the Eastern Cape. Standards are as high as ever and the 'cabins' are well maintained, well serviced and spotless. Others have described the delightful location on the edge of indigenous forest, and the hot and cold outdoor showers but for me 2 things stand out - the friendly professionalism of Rob and his team and the warm reassuring feeling that after a long and tiring day in the field a clean, comfortable room awaits. Relaxing is easy in a place like this. Well done Rob. 100% Magic.
The views onto the forest are very relaxing, and the forest walks are food for the soul.
The Shire chalet's are single room, open plan units with an en-suit shower/wc. The unit sleeps up to 4 (Queen sized bed & 2 loft beds).
The design is very different to the straight walls we are used to, which gives a sense of space and comfort. The high pitched roof with skylight windows also provides an airy feeling. Being made out of wood, the chalet warms up quickly when the heater is on. Although it was icy outside, we did not need the electric blankets. If the wind is blowing hard, the windows tend to rattle rather loudly at night if you are a light sleeper.
The kitchen is equipped with the basics (2 plate stove, microwave and fridge) and wood can be purchased if you want to make a fire for braaing.
Our kids loved the open space between the chalets and exploring the small river running along the edge of the forest.
Certainly a place to recommend for a relaxing weekend away.
