We stayed 2 nights here while visiting Wilpattu. It is the most amazing location with only a few rooms. The rooms are all en suite but are simply furnished which adds to the character. Jeeves ,our host is very knowledgeable on everything to do with Sri Lanka. We ate delicious hoppers made by a local lady who came in and cooked our dinner. We also ate a delicious curry with string hoppers. There is an amazing lake with many birds and covered in lotus flowers.Next time we must stay longer and walk round the lake .We visited Wilpattu Park which was about 30 minutes away. The Park was great and we saw a few leopards which was very exciting and also saw a sloth bear.Looking forward to returning .
The Ibis is a small (four rooms) private hotel in the most beautiful lakeside setting very near Wilpattu National Park. We watched incredible birdlife from the balcony in front of our room at sunrise and sunset. The small staff of just five are kind and attentive, but the true star is the owner Jeeves who is a warm and hospitable host and generously shared with us his knowledge about his home country of Sri Lanka. Couple that with outstandingly good food (can still remember the taste of that locally made artisan buffalo curd!) and you have the perfect recipe for the thoughtful and appreciative visitor. The Ibis won’t appeal to everyone - the rooms are no frills but have everything you need. We left feeling like we’d made a lifelong friend and hope to return again someday.
A couple more things to note:
- The Ibis has a young man from the local village who works as the hotel’s naturalist and can take you on an evening walk to spot the shy and elusive Loris - not to be missed!
- The naturalist can be hired to accompany you on a your safari into nearby Wilpattu national park. We didn’t know this til too late but would totally recommend - he will add so much value to your safari experience.
- Jeeves has built a natural swimming pool fed by rainwater and naturally filtered by water plants. Again, maybe not for everyone but it was a lovely experience to share the pool with fish and frogs while enjoying a cool beer at the end of a hot day.
The Ibis is in a stunning location overlooking a lake. On arrival we were welcomed by Jeevaka with refreshments and after settling into our room, we sat on the comfortable chairs outside. We immediately felt relaxed watching and listening to the wildlife. Jeevaka then asked if we would like to go out on the lake in his boat. We enjoyed a magical hour watching and photographing the birds which he helpfully identified for us and watching the sun set. On learning of our interest in wildlife, he asked if we would like to go on a night walk with the local guide Saran to try and see the loris which we did. Not only did we see two loris but also a Scops owl, another rare sighting. A couple of days later we did another enjoyable walk with Saran, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide who was keen to give us the best possible experience.
We really enjoyed the food provided. It was sourced locally, was very fresh and cooked beautifully, it was also plentiful! It was full of flavour and a great introduction to the food of Sri Lanka.
We were so impressed with the level of hospitality. Jeevaka seemed to anticipate everything that we might need or like and went out of his way to make sure we felt at home and part of the family.
We were also impressed by the ethos of sustainability and supporting the local community which Jeevaka has put into practice.
We thoroughly enjoyed our three nights at The Ibis and would recommend staying here if at all possible when visiting Sri Lanka.
this was our 1st visit to the amazing country of Sri Lanka and after a long 30hours of travelling from home our first place of stay on a packed itinerary was The Ibis. we were met with a very warm welcome, cooling towels and a cold refreshing drink! much needed! then after settling we had a delicious home cooked lunch.
the location near a lake was full of wildlife from butterfly's (in Jeeves brilliant butterfly garden), squirrels, lizards and plenty of bird life including beautiful kingfishers at the natural swimming pool!
All the staff were first class, friendly and going above and beyond your needs, the owner Jeeves was so informative, explaining lots of things from the food, cultures, traditions, wildlife and we got to meet his wonderful Mum who was a jewel, it was so lovely chatting to her. You can tell they all love wildlife as much as us guests.
As for the food, local produce, home cooked, full of flavour, was like eating at the Ritz and always too much for us! we never had the same thing twice!
the room was perfect, a really good size and clean, with aircon (much needed for us Brits!), adaptor already supplied, water, floor fan, torch, toiletries', all supplied.
this was our base for 3 nights for our 2 full day safaris in Wilpattu national park. we were out for 12 hours both days and this you are catered for with a pack up/picnic proved for both breakfast and lunch, again fantastic food and plenty of it, plus water, snacks and the best ginger tea I've ever had!
the Ibis was a perfect location for safaris, which were amazing!! we saw 5 leopards on our first day (this Jeeves told us was record for any guests!! sadly didn't see anymore for the rest of the holiday), also sloth bears, monkeys, deer, jackal's, water buffalos, reptiles, birds galore and our 1st Sri Lankan Elephant! totally amazing.
Our last night we sat under the night sky with a lion beer, sums up this place and area perfectly, idyllic!!
thank you all for having us, it was like a home from home.
Our second visit to Ibis, and this time with my 16 year old nephew who just loved the tree house so much that he didn't miss his technology!
The highlights of this place are the staff and host, who are so warm and accommodating! The simply divine local food which I continue to dream of long after I have left - and the absolute peace of sitting out in the open deck or the garden area outside for morning and evening meals.
It truly is balm to the spirit to spend time here
The bedrooms and bathrooms are very clean and comfortable. The treehouse is really special. We all sat out there one evening to watch the sun dip over the water and watch the birds flying home!
The big hornbills among a host of other birds visit the trees around the property and the natural pool is just perfect to cool off after a dusty drive in the park
