we were there a week in a very nice room. We arrived around 2 in the morning from a late flight. Our cab driver patiently pounded on the door and Carlos let us in and settled us in our room. The staff is outstanding and tried to help, there was a major language issue though. The hostel is not in a touristy part of town which I like and is only a short walk from the center of town. If you go right as you leave the door and continue down the street you will discover the local town with local food and shopping and peeks into schools. We felt very secure there.
My problem was that there were not enough internationals there or enough tourist literature to help advise us on our adventure.
When we arrived to the hostel at 5pm we were immediately greeted by two obviously intoxicated owners of the hostel. We offered to go to an atm to pay but they assured us it was no problem and to just pay tomorrow. Later that night at 11pm once we were already asleep (we were up early for a long bus ride) they pounded on our door waking us up yelling “give us money” still very drunk. Once we calmed them down they left us be,only to continue drinking and partying loudly in the next room until 3 in the morning. The breakfast they offer never happened because the staff were too hungover to even get out bed until late afternoon. Horrible experience with unprofessional staff! Do not stay here!! The wifi in the hostel is also nearly non existent.
The staff while friendly enough seemed to be all volunteers, which in my experience does not lead to a well run hostel. Added to this the room leaked water during our stay and as such completely DESTROYED my laptop. After discussing this with the "staff" I requested a report from the owner for insurance purposes and was told I'd receive this via email, 6 days later still waiting to receive it. Barely any hot water and you could hear everything from the adjoining rooms. I'm summary, don't bother, there's way better places you can stay for slightly more money.
We stayed here on a short trip to explore the city, and found it to be quite nice. The room we stayed in was very cute and clean, the shared bathrooms were nicely clean as well. The courtyard is gorgeous and inviting! The people working there were kind and helpful. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, and its distance from the center helps keep it that way. It's far enough that the noise at night is not an issue, but close enough to walk easily.
I've traveled a lot but have never stayed somewhere where the reviews are so different to what I found . My room was basically a mud hut with a bed and a light and not worth the 300 I paid . It's a good 15 minutes walk to the centre . This place feels like a new age commune and if that's your thing then you'll love it . If not best look elsewhere , particularly if you require cleanliness !!
