Greater Johannesburg, South Africa3 contributions2 helpful votesWe stayed overnight at this establishment on the 23rd December - there is nothing special to report from a room perspective. Just a basic room and shower and a box to put the keys in when you check out. No personal service. However I stupidly left my wedding ring and diamond earrings on the nightstand when leaving. I reported this to Hettie the owner and that's when things became very unsatisfactory. She basically agreed that as the items were left there and the staff have not notified her of finding them they most likely have been stolen by her staff. Not very reassuring for guests! I think when running a guest house you really need to have honest people cleaning the rooms. The owner just said "oh well". I asked if she could check with the staff and get back to me. She agreed and I heard nothing. Just phoned this morning and Hettie tells me "haven't had time to check". I was quite annoyed as if a guest has potentially had such valuables stolen by your staff wouldn't you have the bare courtesy to follow it up as a matter of priority? The owners are vague and uncommunicative which is also quite worrying. I just wonder what would happen if something serious occurred? Would not stay here again. Will keep chasing them but this experience has left a sour taste.

Heidi, (not sure why you have commented here as Vivan Margot?)
You booked a standard en-suite room with dstv, aircon and en-suite shower for the 23rd Dec. We are upset to hear that you have lost your earrings and wedding ring again, as you mentioned a recent hijacking as well! We have never before had guests’ belongings go missing and our staff who have been with us for years we trust wholeheartedly. It is not unusual for guests to leave their valuables. We daily have guests who leave anything from cellphones, cameras, adaptors, jewellery, wallets and camera equipment worth approximately R50000 most recently and we end up phoning our guests to let them know and then post them back, unless the clients arrange otherwise. This has never been a problem in 26 years of running the guesthouse, thus you can understand our surprise when you accused our staff and call them dishonest??
You left early before breakfast between 5 and 6am you mentioned (thus the arrangement of where to put the keys in the box) and only let us know around 4pm that you were missing your wedding ring and earrings. Mike, who booked you in, immediately went and fine tooth-combed the unit you were in. The cleaning staff only arrive after breakfast and thus Mike and Hettie had not been able to follow up with them by the time you phoned again the next morning. The SAPS arrived to investigate the case, and left satisfied with the explanations provided.
We understand your loss and take your word for it, but take umbrage to the false allegation that our staff have been referred to as dishonest. We have full guesthouse insurance which covers our guests in any event. I have offered that we claim from our insurance which you have declined. You have my personal numbers if you decide otherwise.

In South Africa at present unfortunately SECURITY is of top concern when travelling. Lighthouse certainly took care of this. Locking electric gates and undercover parking on the premises. The room was adequate and spotlessly clean. JC's pub right across the road took good care of me. Food was good. As I had an early (0400) start arranged the day before to put the key into a lockbox. Well satisfied with all aspects of my stay at Lighthouse.

WE were warmly welcome when we arrived. The courtyard was in a neat little well kept garden. The bulbines were admired and I got a lecture on their magical healing properties. Its nice to hear about folksy country remedies. This was a Bed and Breakfast so the need for service was limited except in the on and then off and then on reservation. In the end all is well that ends well. Some of the problems were related to Booking.com's website.
We like the family room with its one double bed and two singles (but we were two). We would have preferred a queen or bigger and that is our only negative comment. The room however was more than spacious and airy.
Breakfast was good with cereal and a cooked part. Perhaps some might have liked something more substantial but for us it was just right. Colesberg is an historic place but the restaurants in the town leave much to be desired.
So we did not like the small double bed and facilities adjacent to the hotel but the B&B itself were one of the best.

A lovely room. Air-conditioned. Thank heavens as it was very cold in Colesburg. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by Adri. Check in was smooth. Bathroom facilities were modern and shower was had good water pressure.
