After having an amazing experience with the elephant interaction that Bayete Zulu offers, our group of 13 stayed at the lodge. It is self catering so you will need to provide your own food and drink but the staff on site and in the kitchen were amazing! We stayed for 2 nights and each meal was absolutely delicious. After breakfast, you can lounge by the pool and watch the wildlife on the hill in front! We were lucky enough to have lions in the area the entire stay so we saw a lioness stalking impala while enjoy a cocktail by the pool! 👍🏻👌🏻🦁 Rooms are lovely, aircon, safe, refrigerator, bath, beautiful decor! The guides were all fantastic and very knowledgeable and put up with our rowdy crew :) Definitely worth the extra money when comparing to other self catering lodges in Umfolozi. Well be back soon soon! Thanks for an epic time Bayete Zulu!

Bayete Zulu is definitely one of the best game reserves I've been visiting so far. The lodge is located on a hill, the deck and the small pool overseeing the whole valley. The view from them is astonishing. Elephants passed by in front of us. Besides the heigth guarantees less humidity and way less bugs than down in the valley (I got the evidence comparing two lodges in the same day). Rooms are lovely and perfectly set in each detail, including a private part of the deck with table and chairs. Open living room with sat tv and tables in the shadows provide a great location where relax and enjoy food and friends. The guide was excellent and very friendly, we easily spotted most of the animals including lions and rhinos. Great stay, amazing KwaZulu-Natal!

my family from Australia and I from SA visited Bayete Zulu in September, and just loved the experience, the elephant interaction was awe inspiring, but loved the lodge, rooms, pool, views, the lodge is not 5 * and several things need fixing, but to have accommodation, someone to cook for you, and 2 game drives a day, where do you get value like that? Julian our guide, extremely knowledgeable, very patient with kids questions, very helpful, cannot recommend this game experience enough

I'd like to preface this review by saying I had stayed with a SUPERB safari camp at Kruger National Park before coming to Bayete Zulu, so everything from here on is based on my comparison of the 2 safari camps.

Pros: Bayete is located on top of a hill so you overlook a beautiful vista of the African bush, great infinity pool, helpful and friendly staff (this is a self serve camp so you buy the food, the staff cooks it for you), good sized rooms (the suites are MUCH nicer than the rooms), in-room air conditioning available, free (but very limited) internet, free car parking.

Cons: By comparison to my experience at the Kruger safari I was previously on, this reserve either has VERY few animals or they are all hiding - we only saw very few creatures in the 4 days we were there. The staff was all fairly new (and young!) and didn't come across as particularly knowledgeable about on the animals (the rangers at Kruger had all worked there for 20+ years). The rooms are not sealed at all (ie. room doors have a big gap on the bottom so any/all bugs will go into your room - one night we found a giant spider the size of my hand hanging out on our bed). The decor is out dated. Since it is self service, any food or beverage you need would require a 30-40 mins drive to the nearest town Hluhluwe.

We stayed for 2 nights in August 2011 and have 2 boys age 5 & 2. We had an amazing time - the lodge is beautiful, it has everything that you need: children's playground/playroom, spa, outdoor jacuzzi, swimming pool etc. The game drives were brilliant and we saw pretty much everything except lions, but I gather that these were only just introduced into the reserve at around the time we stayed. The location is ideal, not too far from the main road but far enough into the bush (about 13km in total) that you feel secluded. The lodge feels very safe and the children loved the space and the jungle gym/ trampoline. The food was really good which was an unexpected bonus and the children were well-catered for. The staff were all very friendly, helpful and knowledgable about the reserve. The package deal which includes the game drives, food & drink was great value and I would thoroughly recommend this place to anyone but particularly for people with children.
