I was at Colin's for a weekend in between some business events. Did three rides ("safari" first morning, then evening ride the same day and, since I did not have enough, earl morning ride the next day. Connie and her staff was phenomenal, I was lucky to ride with another another customer who was similarly skilled and they took us on a progression of difficulty and fun, ending with a full gallop. All this while seeing giraffes, gnus, zebras and more. I also did the walk with the lions that is really interesting, pleasant and informative. Playing with 6 mo and less than 1 month old lions is really fun! The staff is all excellent. My room was simple but clean and comfortable. Just be aware that when you arrive from the main (dirt) road you have to pull the gate to the property open yourself --there is no cellphone reception at the gate. I did not give full marks for sleep quality because you get lions roaring from 5AM; this is kind of fun and did not bother me, but I guess does not qualify for perfect sleep.

Thank you so much for enjoying our beautiful home with us. I really had to laugh when you write that you did not give a 5 star for sleep quality because of the lions roaring!! That is SO funny!!

We really enjoyed our stay at Horseback Africa. We were in the Giraffe Room which was clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated in true African style. We were warmly greeted by Colin and Theony upon our arrival and we found all the staff to be most friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the horse safari and felt that we could have gone on riding for hours!! Colin questioned us about any previous riding experience and briefed us well before we set off. He chose suitable horses for each guest and we felt safe at all times. It was a marvellous experience and we were surprised at how close we could get to the wild animals. The lion tour was interesting, but unfortunately it was very hot and the lions didn't feel like running about too much. However, we were also feeling the heat, so that was not a problem. We can highly recommend Horseback Africa. Our whole stay was very relaxing and enjoyable. We hope to be back!

I stayed at Horseback Africa over night last week and enjoyed an unforgettable experience. The property, and all contained within, is in excellent condition. The lodge ( I stayed in the Zebra Room), is well maintained, very comfortable and has a wonderful ambiance. The lodge is designed with tree trunks set inside to appear as if the ceilings are supported by them...pretty cool. The parklands surrounding the lodge and pool area are lush and green with many penned animals to visit and observe within (lions, lion cubs, tortoise, meerkats, guinea pig, talking parrot....) so that, whilst you are not on the safari activities you can relax and enjoy the surrounds. There are two delightfully playful dogs who followed me on my walks. I did the Walking with Lions Tour which I enjoyed very much. I even saw a lion and lioness mating, which was a pretty interesting first for me, and then to be walking with, and holding, lion cubs shortly after was a thrill. Next morning I did The Horse Back Safari. I really enjoyed this activity. I have been on safari many times but never on horse back and I am not a rider at all but Connie and Mavis chose a most beautiful horse for me, called Divide, and their instructions and adherence to safety gave me the freedom to truly relax and enjoy the surrounds. We saw wildebeest, impala, Zebra and Giraffe and really did get up close to each on our horses. A number of things really stand out with these experiences at Horseback Africa; the fact that horse back Africa is not just a tourist attraction but is a working conservation project and the fact that it is obvious to see the genuine happiness of all of the staff. I really did enjoy my experience of a couple of days and recommend a day trip or two day stay at Horse back Africa.

I was traveling alone from Joburg to horseback Afrika. When arrived they made me feel very welcome immediately. Fresh pizza for lunch, drinks to choose from and when finished a walk with the younger lions but not before the instructions were given. I was happy to hear the lions are not here to be grown up and used as lions to hunt on later on. The gentleman giving us the tour spoke loving and with proud over their lions. It was an amazing experience to walk with them and see them running around like that. I spent the night at their lodge. A very comfortable room with everything you need. The best thing was hearing the lions at night.

The next day I went horseback riding and with not very much experience they took the time to teach me some basics. Walk around, get to know each other, how to get in the saddle not only safe but also what is the best way for the horse. Here again I was impressed with the knowledge and love they were doing their work.

I would really suggest this tour to anyone and for me.. I will definitely come back again.

A big thank you for the whole crew!!

We were in South Africa for 2 weeks this month. Of the time in South Africa, all of which was unforgettable, some of our fondest memories were from the experience with Colin MacRae and family at Horseback Africa. The best way to describe this bed-and-breakfast horse ranch and game preserve is that it feels like you're visiting your favorite cousins' country home. You'll meet some of Colin's adult children who run much of the day-to-day operations. And the staff who have very clearly been with them a very long time. You'll have room to roam on your own - we felt very safe and secure walking around visiting the animals they have on site - lions of various ages, meercats, guinea pigs, rabbits, horses and more. The ride was spectacular - where else can you ride amongst a herd of zebras, visit a giraffe close up, see a herd of wildebeest while you're riding? The whole experience was amazing. If you're wondering about the quality of horses, they are in superb shape, well cared for and good natured. We had absolutely no problems in a group that ranged from pretty experienced riders (my h and I have owned our own) to almost first time riders. They separated the experienced riders into a group that could run a bit which was great fun. I would go back in a heartbeat - when we were leaving I told my h that I want to just do it all over again!!
