Best Beaches Around Bora Bora

Exclusively commissioned by TripAdvisor

Bora Bora is renowned for its turquoise waters, gorgeous landscape, world-class dive sites, and pristine beaches. The best luxury resorts feature stunning beaches; a few resorts even own private islands, offering guests an even more exclusive beach experience. However, Bora Bora's main public beach is still one of the best spots on the island. If you plan to explore by boat, your guide can show you spots that are public or offer access to the particular tour company so that you don't get in trouble for trespassing. As most beaches in Bora Bora are privately owned, the easiest way to enjoy them is to book your stay at one of the island's best beach resorts or you may be expected to pay a day fee to visit a particular beach.

Erin D's City Tips

  • The main languages in Bora Bora are French and Tahitian, although English is widely spoken as well in most places.
  • The airport is located north of the main island and most transfers are done by boat. Take the ferry to Vaitape where small buses will pick you up.
  • Bring reading materials and games with you if you visit during rainy season since most activities are outdoor-related.
  • Currency is French Pacific Franc (CFP).
  • Most people explore Vaitape by bicycle or you can rent mopeds (with mandatory helmet) and small electric vehicles.
  • Le Truck is the only public transportation in Bora Bora, which is just a bus that goes about halfway around the island and back. Arrange transportation through your hotel.
  • Some resorts allow topless sunbathing while others strictly prohibit it. Be cautious about topless sunbathing on the public beach or around locals — always best to check first.

    Erin D Says:

Matira Beach is a beautiful mile stretch of beach at the southern tip of Bora Bora Island. The water is crystal clear and the sand is incredibly soft. Visitors to Bora Bora fall in love with Matira and many say it's one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. You can snorkel right off the beach; two of the best spots located at the northern point, as well as the east side down to the southern-most point. Bring your snorkel gear and hop in the water to check out the colorful coral and the overwhelming number of tropical fish. You'll quickly learn why Matira Beach is often called The Aquarium.

    Tips
    • There is a walking trail on the eastern side of Matira Beach where you can hike up to a spot where coastal defense guns were placed by the US during WWII.
    • There is no equipment provided so bring your own gear.
    • The beach can be crowded on public holidays and days when cruise ships are in Bora Bora.

Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa is located on Motu Tevairoa, with access to its own private beach and stunning views of Mount Otenamu. While over half of the thatched-roof bungalows are stilted over the lagoon, 30 are set among the gardens, or on the beach if you prefer a room on the beach itself. Lots of activities are directly available from the beach, including kayaking, snorkeling, and outrigger canoeing.

The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is surrounded by sand-fringed islets and offers more than just idyllic shoreline to relax on. Join a team and play a game of volleyball on the beachside court, or try your hand at badminton. For something different, try Boules, a game that originated in the south of France and is similar to bocce ball. Head off the shore and go snorkeling or book a windsurfing lesson.

    Erin D Says:

The Bora Bora Eden Beach Hotel offers one of the best views from its beach — a 180-degree lagoon view from the beach! And, no over-the-water bungalows to detract from the views on the beach here so it's a rather unique spot in Bora Bora. Both beaches at the Eden Beach Hotel are private so you'll definitely need to be a guest here to enjoy these amazing views. Enjoy beach activities like volleyball or check out a kayak or canoe, go snorkeling, or even learn how to windsurf.

    Tips

The InterContinental Thalasso-Spa in Bora Bora is located on one of the most popular motus, Motu Piti Aau. This coral island is a favorite beach spot for many travelers visiting Bora Bora. Motu Piti Aau is home to the popular Matira Beach just across the road. While staying at the InterContinental Thalasso-Spa, you'll be able to check out the 'motu hammock,' located just off the beach. It's a small sandbar with a hammock stretched between two trees — perfect for an afternoon of relaxing.

In addition to the resort on the main island, Hilton owns Motu Tapu, reserved exclusively for invited guests and those staying at the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa. Motu Tapu is one of the most photographed islands in the South Pacific and was once the private beach of Queen Pomare IV of Tahiti. It's been described as the world's most perfect place to relax. Different packages are available to Hilton guests, which range from a picnic on the beach to a private dinner for two under the stars.

As its name suggests, the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort is located right on the beach in Bora Bora. You'll not only have access to the awesome beach on the property, but to the private island just across the lagoon. There is a free shuttle boat between the mainland resort and the private island. The property was originally built by filmmaker Dino De Laurentis in 1977 to house Mia Farrow and the crew while shooting Hurricane.

If you're not staying at the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa, but are dying to visit Motu Tapu, book a trip with Raanui Tours who stop at the famous Motu, one of the most photographed islands in the world. You won't be able to stay for hours as if you were staying at the Hilton, but it's one of the best ways to experience the island as a non-guest.
