cafespecific's City Tips

  • Even though many Chinese traditional foods contain meat or fish, there are plenty of restaurants in Shanghai with meat-free versions of those dishes on the menu.
  • Tipping is not part of the Chinese culture, and can even be considered impolite.
  • Asia, and China in particular, has a very interesting new dessert culture — ranging from bubble tea to mango soup with tofu jelly. If you haven't tried these yet, look out for them during your trip.
  • Shanghai’s restaurant scene pretty much covers all parts of the world, so be sure to explore beyond traditional Shanghai cuisine during your trip.

Din Tai Fung is a famous restaurant chain with branches in multiple countries in Asia, and even in the United States and Australia. Even though originally from Taiwan, Din Tai Fung offers a mix of Chinese and Taiwanese food, and is mainly known for its 'xiaolongbao' (steamed bun — a traditional Shanghai dish), delicious chicken soup, and mung bean noodle 'xiaoxi.' Going with friends or family means you can try them all!

Vegetarian Lifestyle is a restaurant that impresses with its delicious vegetarian food, rather than a very innovative name. And the best part is, there is even something on the menu to keep meat lovers happy. The restaurant specializes in traditional Chinese and fusion dishes, made with vegetarian meat substitutes, which look and taste the same as meat, but are actually made from soy or seitan (wheat gluten).

Jia Jia Tang Bao on Huanghe Road can definitely be considered one of Shanghai's hidden gems — particularly as it's notoriously tricky to find the place! The menu features a huge choice of dumplings, dumpling soups, and other traditional Chinese street food, and the place is very popular among the locals, which is why you will not see many westerners here. As so often in Shanghai, the restaurant doesn't look very appealing from the outside, but don't let that deter you!

    Tips
    • Try a dessert with red beans! (Red bean flavoring is the Asian equivalent to using chocolate in Europe and the Americas.)
