Mauritius has a complex history, having been under Dutch, British, and French rule at different periods, and currently has a population comprised predominantly of people of Indian and Creole decent, with a small Chinese population. This ethnic mix is reflected in the blend of street food and restaurant cuisine, where you can find dishes that originate from almost every continent.

Mel C's City Tips

  • Tipping is optional in Mauritius and not generally expected. But if you are happy with your service you can give 5% to 10%.
  • You can travel by bus to most of the island's major towns, and for very cheap prices. Buses leave pretty regularly throughout the day.
  • The easiest way to get around the island beyond the main towns, and at your own pace is to rent a car.

    Mel C Says:

Indian food is one of my favorite types of food - I've compared the flavors between restaurants in Canada, Europe, Cambodia and Mauritius, and Happy Rajah is in my list of the top three best Indian restaurants I've ever experienced. The chefs execute recipes derived from the 17th century Moghul emperors and use traditional cooking methods; there are over 60 delicious items to choose from; and you can relish in its beautifully decorated interior.

    • You can't have a meal without trying their naan bread, made fresh in a tandoori oven.
    • Tell the waiter what level of spice you can handle when you order.

If you're venturing to the east coast of delicious Mauritius, do visit this hidden gem that is much more than just a restaurant. When you walk into Le Cafe des Arts, owned by the lovely Jocelyn, you'll feel like you're walking into a different world! With an explosion of colors, this old sugar mill, where the restaurant is located, has been converted into a beautiful and uniquely decorated institution that integrates art, culture and top quality food. The level of service and care at Le Cafe des Arts stands out well above most hotels and restaurants, and you will feel like a VIP guest on each visit. In addition to their superb European and Indian recipes cooked to perfection, the experience is enhanced by a fantastic selection of music.

Escale Creole is a family-owned business run by Marie-Christine and her mother Majo, who always greet their guests with a warm smile and typical Mauritian hospitality. It had been Marie-Christine's dream to open the restaurant - since she was 12 years old - so that they could share the traditions and flavors of authentic Creole cuisine. Situated in a beautiful garden in the center of the small village Moka, her dream has been realized, and you can choose from a variety of delicious dishes made from fresh and local ingredients — many of which are from their garden — and prepared as they would be in a typical Mauritian home. Rice is the base of the meals and common traditional dishes include salted fish and chutney de coco. You will fall in love with the hosts as much as the food!

Sushi Me is part of the four-star Hennessy Park Hotel, and the decor is modern and minimalist. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese food, particularly raw fish, but the dishes here are fresh and have fantastic flavor, so I have to mention it on this list! The restaurant's simple, yet elegant design contrasts with the vibrant colors of the meals. Plus, if you want to see your dishes being made right before your eyes, you can take a seat upfront at the sushi bar.

While I rarely recommend chain restaurants, I always make an exception for Ocean Basket, a South African owned establishment that offers a variety of delicious seafood options and even a Mediterranean platter. The latest addition to their menu is a six prawn skewer with cucumber and Thousand Island dressing. You can expect a line of people during lunch and dinner times.

While in Mauritius, you'll be exposed to many fried food, curry, and meat dishes, so if you feel in need of an Italian food fix - and want to enjoy a meal right by the beach in Flic en Flac - then definitely stop by Chez Pepe. The dishes here are handmade, and the pizzas are hot from the wood oven, which, if you love Italian food, you know makes a huge difference in flavor. Complement your meal with a variety of cocktails and a great wine list.

While you're in Grand Baie in the north of Mauritius, go beyond the mainstream restaurants to find La Rougaille Creole - a haven for fresh and authentic Mauritian food, visited by locals and tourists alike. The ingredients are fresh (including the fish), and the lobster is perhaps the best meal on the menu. While you're waiting for your meal, enjoy the complimentary home made rum, and let the friendly staff take good care of you.

Les Copains D'Abord has a great selection of local and international dishes, particularly French, and is located right by the beach in Mahebourg on the southeastern coast of Mauritius. While this restaurant is a bit pricier than some, it is well worth it for the food, live music, and gorgeous view of the sea. Definitely try the gratin, a French dish featuring a golden breadcrumb crust, grated cheese, eggs and/or butter.
