Best Food in Budapest

Budapest is a cosmopolitan city filled with wonderful kitchens across its twenty-three districts. This guide includes my city-center favorites; local gems with delicious food, solid service, and high value for money, as opposed to trendy 'come to be seen' but then 'gone-in-a-flash' restaurants. While meal costs will vary across my recommended spots, the quality of food will not. So as we say here before a drink or meal — "Jó étvágat!"

This is my favorite restaurant in Budapest, and in my top ten eateries worldwide. Comme Chez Soi delivers — oh boy, it delivers. This tiny, eight-table venue is located in the very heart of Budapest, a few steps from the pedestrian shopping street Vaci Utca, and offers scrumptious Hungarian and Italian fare along with service as good as the food. From the best foie gras dish in the world (yes, world — in my opinion!) to seafood to tiramisu, you are sure to leave full and happy. Take your time and understand that you’re in for more than two hours of food and drink heaven.

When visiting friends and family ask me to recommend a top-quality Hungarian restaurant, Rosenstein always tops the list. The food here is simply fantastic: good, nourishing like-your-grandma-cooks Hungarian fare complemented by excellent service. While tourists do dine here, its usually packed with locals celebrating a special occasion or hosting business lunches. I prefer the fish dishes, which tend to be simple in presentation, fresh, and delicious. However, my family members enjoy the various meats and foie gras dishes; simply put, whatever you order, you can't go wrong!

Located in the fashionable District XIII on trendy Pozsonyi Street, this traditional and casual Hungarian restaurant will leave you stuffed to the gills with traditional fare at wonderful (some may say cheap) prices. You can expect to find many things here, including a large menu filled with clog-your-artery-type dishes, classic checkered table cloths, and a usually busy restaurant with efficient staff. This is the food of Budapest’s past, which is regrettably becoming less common as tastes lean more towards international offerings: taste it at its best while you can!

Located in the heart of the city, close to the Parliament and Szabadság Tér (Freedom Square), Tukory is a wonderful purveyor of authentic Hungarian fare. Serving a mix of local business people and residents alike, Tukory is a friendly, casual restaurant, and its menu stays true to tradition, with a wide selection of tasty soups, including Gulyásleves. The mains include all the usual meat dishes (turkey, beef, chicken, and pork), as well as healthier options and a few vegetarian plates. While the food here is not gourmet, it’s quite good and can be relied upon to deliver an authentic Hungarian culinary experience at a reasonable price.

Located just outside of the Castle District walls, close to the Bésci Kapu (Vienna Gate), this longtime Budapest jewel is a must-visit, especially if you enjoy the finer things in life. My wife and I eat here on occasion and especially enjoy the white-glove service, the caviar and the cozy outdoor patio area. More than caviar however, Arany serves a full-blown, awe-inspiring meal. The professionally trained chef serves delectable dishes, which usually include a tasty surprise. Last summer we were served horseradish and apple soup as a starter. I asked the waiter to repeat himself because I thought it must have been a mistake. It wasn't and the soup was wonderful — potentially the best soup I have ever had! Expect this type of creative atmosphere and cuisine.

Budapest does Italian well, and while there are many authentic kitchens scattered across the city, none delivers higher-quality Italian fare than Fausto’s. Located in the heart of the Jewish District, Fausto’s is a semi-formal restaurant with a white table cloth setting, but the food is the real star here: every dish is prepared as carefully as if you were the prime minister. The fresh fish is served in contemporary ways, along with raviolis, risottos and other pasta plates. You can even ask that a main be brought in an appetizer size — just in case you cannot decide!

Located along the river on the Pest side, Greek food is the specialty here at Taverna Dionysos, which has been a consistently highly-rated restaurant for decades. This casual eatery combines good food at good value with solid service, and has been a favorite of mine since the 1990s. Try the classic seafood dishes, grilled meats, plus a wide variety of vegetarian plates, all of which in my opinion make this spot the best Greek in town.

Prime Steakhouse sits in the heart of Budapest on the Pest side, close to St. Stephen’s Basilica. The setting is an attempt at Las Vegas-cool, while the dining experience aims to match the quality of the top international steak eateries. As a land-locked country, I tend to shy away from seafood, but not at Prime, where both the steaks and the seafood are truly wonderful. However, if you're visiting from a country where you can bite into a juicy piece of beef at any time, why come here to eat steak when there are many other excellent, more regional offerings to sample?

Mexican in Budapest you say? I understand that you might have reservations, but I still highly recommend Iguana for several reasons. Firstly, it's located just a block away from the parliament building, making it a reliable restaurant choice during a day of sightseeing. Secondly, and most importantly, the food is out of this world! Owned by a guy from Southern California, who knows his style of Mexican well, Iguana has been a city staple since the 1990s due to its authentic, tasty dishes. Add to this a well-stocked bar, a nice casual atmosphere and a professional wait staff, and you've got a truly winning dining formula.

    Jeremy F Says:

Sir Lancelot should first be visited for the experience and fun 'medieval' shows — including dancers and sword-fighting — rather than its good, if unremarkable, food. Located in the city center, Sir Lancelot’s environment will take you back centuries with staff in traditional costume, dim medieval-style lighting and knight’s armor adorning the walls; a fun atmosphere for both adults and children alike. The food centers around various marinated meats served on large platters with sides of fruits and vegetables, and all sorts of beverages, including wine and beer, can be enjoyed as the 'shows' spring up at random around your table.

The Central Market Hall is one of Budapest’s finest attractions, and great for people-watching with locals pulling their shopping carts into the hall most mornings. While the main floor is filled with food counters of all sorts — fruits and vegetables, meats, sausages, spirits, dry goods, etc. — my real food recommendation lies on the top floor. While the tourists are usually shopping for local goodies downstairs, we locals are heading upstairs to grab some wonderful Hungarian snacks and meals. I start with 'langos,' a deep-fried flat bread topped with your choice of cheese, onion, garlic, sour cream and more. It’s heart-stoppingly good and a great snack to share. Kick back in one of the seating areas and watch the market activity going on below.
