FranciscoFA's City Tips

  • Local currency is Euros. Prices include VAT.
  • Albufeira is a great restaurant destination, with a wide variety of cuisines from Michelin starred to burger and pizza places, ethnic cuisine, and of course, fresh fish!
  • Tipping is discretionary. If you have great service then a tip of up to 10% will ensure smiles all round.
  • Giro, the city bus, takes you to the Marina and other interesting places around Albufeira. The village also has a hop-on hop-off bus, a tourist train, and inexpensive taxis.
  • Start by getting a map of Albufeira to understand what is where. The tourist office is located in the old town at 5 Outubro Street.
  • If you wish to walk around, get your accommodation close to the old town, where many walking streets lead you to Albufeira's main attractions and beaches.
  • As a golf and beach destination, Albufeira is a laid-back town and beach attire is common everywhere. Sunbathing topless is fine and there are nudist beaches.
  • If visiting churches and other religious monuments, please keep your shirt and your shoes/ flip flops on.
  • The majority of Algarve nightclubs expect gentlemen to wear shoes, trousers, shirts, or fashionable t-shirts.
  • Always wear sunscreen and avoid the 12pm to 3pm sun exposure in spring and summer time. The sun is very strong.

With a friendly atmosphere and water access, it is a favorite with locals and visitors — and there are plenty of beach restaurants and watersport activities to choose from. This beach is also great for families.

Olhos de Agua is a small fisherman's village in Albufeira with a beautiful beach. In low tide you can watch the famous natural springs coming out of the sand — known by the locals as 'Olhos de Agua' (water eyes). This beach is great for families as it has direct access from the village and offers a variety of services. The beach restaurant is also quite nice for a fish lunch!

Praia da Falesia is one of the most sought-after beaches in the Algarve. With more than 5 kilometers of sandy beach to choose from, you can find a secluded spot for a special romantic moment or just let your children go wild in the nature. Some areas of the beach have restaurant and watersport activities, while other areas are empty with no one around you. Take your pick!

Praia da Oura is a beach east of Albufeira. Although within walking distance from the old town, it's not an advisable walk for the elderly or families with young children, who should take a taxi or bus. The beach is friendly and has a large sandy area and rock pools in low tide.

Praia Gale is a beautiful beach located west of Albufeira, away from the main villages but surrounded by hotels. Discover a long sandy beach and some of the best rock formations on the coast here — plus, a variety of beach restaurants and watersports are available. Great for families and groups of friends.

Unless you're staying at nearby hotels and apartments, Praia dos Salgados is a bit of a trek from Albufeira old town and can only be reached by car or taxi. So is it worth it? Well, I would not miss it! There's a long, natural beach to explore here, plus a nature reserve where you can walk around and enjoy a variety of birdlife, especially in the early hours or as the sun goes down. There's also a very good fish and seafood beach restaurant — a great spot to meet friends.
