Best Food in Sardinia

Sardinia is a place where you can really experience food. "Pecorino sardo," a local sheep cheese, is definitely Sardinia's pride and most popular snack — served together with a glass of local red wine (Cannonau) and a piece of local bread (Carasau); while carnivores will love the local "porcetto," tender young pork meat. Beyond the most iconic foods, there's much more to discover: From traditional agriturismo to innovative restaurants, there is something for both luxury and budget travelers.

Elena Z's City Tips

  • A car is highly recommended for getting around Sardinia. Public transportation is not efficient.
  • Tipping is not compulsory in Italy, but it's a nice extra touch if you're very satisfied with the service.
  • A 15% service gratuity is usually added to the bill (unless otherwise specified).
  • Ristorante Luigi Pomata
Restaurants (Italian, Mediterranean, Sardinian, Southern-Italian, Fusion)

Luigi Pomata is an internationally renowned chef and an artist in the kitchen. He has his own restaurant and cooking academy right in Cagliari city center, where you can enjoy regional, national and international cuisine, and of course, a wide selection of wines.

    Elena Z Says:

This restaurant is located inside an old villa in the historic city centre of Santu Lussurgiu, in the subregion Montiferru. It's famous in Sardinia for serving two exceptional gastronomic treats — 'Casizolu' (pear-shaped cow cheese) and cow meat from Bue Rosso — and for its slow food presidia status. The chef is eager to combine local products with innovative and traditional cooking, which is done sublimely.

On a tight budget, yet still hoping to taste some memorable local food? Mec Puddu's is the traditional Sardinian fast food! Here you can order culurgiones (fresh ravioli filled with potatoes and, of course, sheep cheese), malloreddus with traditional sausage and tomato sauce, and many other lesser-known local favorites at a much lower price than its upscale counterparts.

You may well end up at this former sheepfold, situated in the middle of Supramonte region, after a hike along one of the amazing tiny beaches in the surrounding area. Ovile Bertarelli delivers the real Sardinian gastronomic experience without any fuss — don't expect an international chef, just pork and sheep meat, sheep cheese, culurgiones (ravioli filled with sheep cheese) and sebadas (dessert filled with sheep cheese) all cooked to perfection.

One of the most popular and coziest wine bars in Cagliari. Here, you'll find an exceptional choice of Sardinian wines and beers, accompanied by typical regional products. You don't usually expect to find specially-brewed beers in Italy, so get ready for a nice surprise! Here at Rubiu, they not only brew their own beer, but also serve Sardinian liquors and tasty pizzas, prepared with local products such as saffron, sheep gorgonzola and Sardinian 'grana' cheese. The philosophy is definitely local and slow, and the prices are absolutely fair.
