You can take a bus from the main station in Heraklion. Make sure to get on a bus going to "Malia Antiquities" (bus #38 I think) ask the kid selling tickets on the bus to tell you when to get off. The bus stop is up the road from the palace. I think the fee is still 4€, not much! There is a small cafe at the site but not much on food. It's good for a coffe or a soda. Also if you keep going down the road, you will come to the beach. There are more food options there. A beachside restaurant and an insane food truck that has it all!!! If you look along the shore and in the rocks, you can find a lot of broken pottery shards still left over from the giant tsunami that destroyed the Minoan culture 3,600 years ago. It's an excellent day trip!!

We didn't have a tour available so took the local bus to malia and then taxi to the ruins I think it was approx 20 euros for taxi both ways and entrance. Also food very limited not the sort of place to go for the day a couple of hours at most. Enjoy your holiday.

The public bus through Hersonnisos takes you right to the door, but be sure to ask and get the rght one.

The Happy train does not gp that far.

I cannot remember the entry price, but it is only a few Euros.

It is a short bus journey from Hersonissos. Make sure you get an Agios Nikolaos bus and the conductor for Malia palace stop. Entrance fee is just a few euros, students get a discount. Definitely worth a visit; you get a very personal experience of Minoan civilisation.
