Old Town Questions & Answers

Toronto, Canada

Hi. We will be in Santorini in October from 4th to 9th. Is it possible to take day trip to Naxos from Santorini? Would there be enough time to take a ferry from Santorini to Naxos in the morning and return to Santorini on the same day in the evening? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, realise I misread this although I think the same will still apply. I read it as visiting Santorini, not Naxos!

The boat from Santorini to Naxos takes 3 hours. If I were you I would stay at least one night in Naxos.

The normal ferry takes 2,5 hours, plus you need additional time in case of busy traffic

It is possible to take a day trip. Recommend the fast ferries. The old town in Naxos is within walking distance. Restaurants are along the marina. Reasonable prices. In October it will be off season so you may get better pricing. Naxos is less commercialized and the people are very friendly.

Yes, it is possible as my wife and I did exactly that earlier this month. However, ferries in October are not quite as plentiful. I just looked at the schedules and it looks as though the only way you can do it and make it worthwhile is by coming back very late. You could get there at 12.10pm on Sea Jets and return at at 22.55 on Hellenic (which is a slow boat so you wouldn't get back to Santorini until 1.20am). This would give you plenty of time but you would have to entertain yourselves for the evening in Naxos Town. That's no bad thing though. You should check the timetables between now and departure as they may change. Just google 'Greek Island ferries'.

We hired a car right off the ferry (there are plenty of rental companies at the dock) and the price is probably cheaper in October (we paid €35 for the day). That allowed us to see most of the island and we finished up by spending some time in the old town, which is really nice.

Good luck !!!

Absolutely! The ferry ride depends on the sea. At most, its a 45 min. to an hour ferry ride. If there are high seas it could take longer. We stayed on Naxos for 6 days and didn't leave. The beaches are amazing and gorgeous, all white sand, much different from the rocks at Santorini, much better swimming. The best restaurant to eat at in the Flamingo by the port. We ate there twice for dinner, there is live music and Greek dancing at night. We did take the high speed ferry to make the most of our time on the islands. Hope this helps! Safe travels.

Hello - YES it is possible IF:

  - you check the times of ferries and get the earliest

  - you make enough time to get from where you are staying in Santorini to the Port

Naxos Town center is well worth the visit and its just there by the port. Having visited all these islands I would definitely go to Naxos. If its not the sunniest of days again the town is perfect.

I don't think so. Also, it takes ages to go up the hill from the ferry and back down again. Taxis are very expensive. Probably cheaper and more practicable to stay the night. Look at Blue Star ferries for info. Zas travel is also brilliant for info.

Hi, we have done the reverse, go from Naxos to Santorini on a day trip last week.

Boat schedules gave us about 6 hours in Santorini.

I believe that by the end of Sept there are less boats, so you should really check schedules.

Yes, this is possible. The ferry arrives in the port where you find lits of nice restaurants and a five minute walk to the old town.

Naxos is a fantastic island and well worth a visit, a long as possible.

Hi Jo

There are a number of ferry options so start at "direct ferries" website. Sorry, I tried to give you the link direct but no HTML allowed here.

There is a lot to see on Naxos, even just in the old town and it is a great place to sit and watch the world go by. Excellent restaurants too. So try to give yourself the longest day possible. Such a great island we're going back next year.

It is possible to do that, even if Naxos deserves more time :) But to see the nice old town and Portara, it should be sufficient. For the ferry's times, check "letsferry" website

While it's possible to do it at this time of the year, it may not be the case in October bc there may be not that many ferries running. We went to naxos after having been to santorini this past month and if I may say so, I would spend more time in santorini bc naxos for a day may not be ideal unless you only want to see the main city which is inter sting but does not justify the hassle of the trip.

You can do this but it is just over 2 hours travelling each way and depends on the ferries. It is very peaceful in comparison to Santorini and also very beautiful. The ferry port is a few minutes walk from the stunning old town.
