Maropeng Visitor Centre Questions & Answers

San Diego, California

How do I get there without a car rental from Peermont Mondiar at Emperors Palace Hotel. Hire cab or private tour?

Once there, is there a shuttle service among various attractions, especially the visitor's center and the Sterkfontein (sp?) Caves.

Can you go partway in the cave or is it one way in and one way, I am 63 so might not be up for arduous explorations.

How long to tour two main sites including boat ride? Are there any cave paintings nearby?

Thank you everyone for the advice and reassurance esp that a 63 year old can navigate caves. I have arranged a tour with a South African agency I used for my hotel and sAfari bookings so am very excited to see this country.

Hello JoAnn3134,

Sorry for being a bit slow in answering but I wanted to answer all your questions and my first try vanished in cyberspace...

I 'm sure you can find a good tour formula to bring you from Jo'burg to the Maropeng site but the people from there can give you a better advice on this issue.

If you're just looking for a budget friendly formula to get there, then I suggest that you ask your hotel in Kempton Johannesburg to arrange for a reliable taxi driver with whom you can negotiate a reasonable price for the trip to Maropeng (and back, or perhaps you arrange this better from there, also via your local hotel and well in time).

About the Maropeng Visitors Centre and the caves: they're next to each other.

The - very short- boat trip is part of the visit to the Centre. The visit to the cave is led by a guide and is not too hard to do: every one has to wear a helmet because in some parts the ceiling is quite low, but it's no 'mission impossible'. I myself am 63 and I have pretty bad knees but I had no problem with the cave visit, that took about 45 minutes.

At Maropeng there are no rock paintings or engravings to my knowledge.

Enjoy your visit!

Sorry for the late reply. At the main visitor center, you can buy the tickets for both the main site and also the caves tour which can include transportation from visitor center to the caves. From your hotel, you can probably grab an uber to maropeng.

The caves are one way in and one way out but it is really not difficult.

Each attraction will take you about an 1 hour each.
