Thakadu River Camp Questions & Answers

Leeds, United Kingdom

Hello. We are visiting in August this year (2022). We have read that the game drives can be chilly at this time of year but wondered how chilly? Do we need to be in trousers or would shorts be OK? We will bring layers but have seen the odd review advising scarves and gloves? Does it then warm up enough through the day to be by the pool? Also, what do both men and women wear on an evening at Dinner, is it quite cold then too? How much spending money would you recommend taking - is there much to spend your money on other than the drinks that aren't included in the full board? And what is the preferred currency? We're from the UK, do we need to bring plug adapters with us? If so, what kind? Thanks!

1. August is probably the coldest month in SA. Although Madikwe has moderate winters, morning and evenings can be fairly chilly. Definitely long pants, beanies and scarfs recommended. On the vehicles ponchos are available, but dress warm. Layering recommended. Even in Africa 3 degrees is cold

2. Days cam be very pleasant. Spending time at pool on the deck; - yes. Swimming for the brave.

3. Small curious shop available. Payment in Rands. Cards accepted. Normal SA restaurant prices.

4. Re plugs; can 't say. SA 2 prong plugs similar to continental Europe.

Great answers, all spot on. My morning drive tip, they don't take alcohol in the morning, but buy a few small Amarula bottles the night before, pop one into your morning coffee on the game drive and welcome to Africa.

Hi, I can answer the question about adaptors - yes you will need them, and the rooms had both the old three prong SA and the new European style SA sockets. We found that in April the morning drives were very chilly until the sun rose, but our guides brought fleecy blankets which were welcomed.
