Why should any African American or person of color pay to visit Cape Coast Castel?
I’m a person of color, I visited, and I enjoyed it very much. We can’t just ignore the past, we need to learn about the horrible times of slavery
Paying entrance fee cannot be determined by colour of skin.
Its either the castle is free for all or everyone pays. I would like to think part of the fee is used to maintain the castle.
The human race has to learn the hurt we still feel even today about the slave trade.
What is brought to reality in this well maintained castle should not be repeated.
The castle has to live on and tell the story and that requires funding from all races.
I believe that every human - whatever colour or creed - should visit this site and/or sites like it, to understand the human condition - it's capacity to exploit, to hate, to consider self interest above all else - and to reflect on that and ensure that it never happens again - I believe in a better future through our understanding of the past - of the experiences of both "sides" - and in the realisation that we must not, we cannot, continue to hurt our fellow men/women. Our happiness, our very being must - I believe - be the result of love, care and compassion for one another.
Interesting question that involving historical and ethic heritage. To simplify I think that maintain the site have costs, guided tours (by the way are really interesting and worth to be part of the tours) costs...Since Elmina and Cape Coast Castle are perfectly managed, the ticket for overseas visitors is justified. And the more are visited, the more the tragedy of african slaves is highlighted and remembered.
I believe the fees help to defray costs, pay personnel and maintain the exhibits, but I don’t know for sure, nor how much Ghanaian government support it gets
