Hello, did they have a guide to take you through Petra and give you the history?

You don't need a guide in Petra. The entrance has free maps which explain the site, and there are also signs at the major sites which explain the area. I felt we did just fine without a guide.

The locals are VERY persistent with trying to sell you trinkets, camel/donkey rides, etc. Just tell them "no" and move on. They will eventually leave you alone.

If you ask for that it can be arranged.

We chose to watch a documentary about Petra before we left our home. When we went, we did not take the guide in with us. We got up early and entered Petra at 6a.m. when gates opened. It was a wonderful experience. No-one else was there. Even the sellers were not up. We walked all the way up to the Monastery and had breakfast there at 08:30. So.. yes you can get them to guide you and give you the history or you can choose to go alone.

We had a guide arranged via our travel agency and he was very informative. You don't need a guide to see the site, but you will probably get more out of your visit if you take one.

The advantage to a guide is they keep the hawkers at bay and if you want to ride to go up will help you negotiate. By the way, it going to Petra investigate getting a Jordan Pass - it is good value.
