How do I get from the market in Otavalo to Pegueche waterfalls?
Bus, tax, or can walk there? Gracias.
You could get a taxi, it would probably cost you $5.00. Walking is far an the bus would leave you in the road where you would still need to walk. Either way, the route is from the market towards the Panamericana road via Ibarra (North), you pass the circle and then two blocks to the right and then straight until you teach the railroad, then make a left until you find the parking space for the Peguche waterfall, by car about 8 minutes, by foot maybe 45 minutes. There is no entrance fee but the community will ask you for a dontation. There are crafts for sale too. Enjoy
I believe we took a cab to the tiny village near the waterfall, and then walked back (less than $10 taxi, and 45 min or so walk). We took the cab because we were not all that adventuresome, and did not know which way to go... But from the waterfall you can see the town, so it was less intimidating... also it was not easy to find a cab back. The walk back was easy, but not all that interesting.
If you are a hardy soul you can walk. My wife and I are in our early 70's and chose not to walk but to take a taxi. Glad we did.
From the major bus terminal in Otavalo.
You can get there in taxi or if you like to walk, is no more than 30 minutes of walk from the market to the entrance.
You can walk, its around an hour walking , or take a taxi.
2/3 dollars in a taxi to the end of the road. You still have a 10/15 min walk uphill through dirt track to craft village. Then after giving small donation (very worthwhile) you walk through trail in forest (beautiful 10/15 min walk) to incredible waterfall .
The buses don't run terribly frequently in that direction, but you can take a taxi for a few dollars each way, or walk (it's about a 45 min to 1hour long walk).
Yes, I believe that the walking directions that Vercit 3 gave are generally accurate. You cross the RR tracks and go parallel w/ them all the way to a police station and then turn right. From there it is a few blocks to the entrance. BUT to get to the police station from the center is quite a walk (maybe 3. miles /5 k or so--but all w/ sidewalks and basically flat) we did the walk and got lucky to go UNDER the RR tracks and see a cool grotto w/ virgin statue, etc along side the road . Not sure what street that was. Then there is plenty of walking to get to the Falls too. Well worth the effort.
