My friends and I are going to Florianopolis in late May. What is Campeche Island like there? Will it be warm enough to swim or explore the isalnd?
Its never warm enough for bathing there! It is allways very cold, even in high summer. But at the same time, it is all year round a great place to explore!
Late may is usually colder. Campeche Island waters are cold even in January. But it would be possible to walk around the island. What I do not know is the frequency and where you can take a boat during fall/winter. In summer you can leave from Armação beach.
Compared to other beaches of Florianopolis Campeche island waters are very cold. I went for a swim but it was very hard to get in the water (that said I am use to the warm waters of the north of Florianópolis: Jurerê Internacional, Praia do Forte, Daniela)
It does not mean that you can't swim. In May you might get really cold specially if it is a windy day. If you want to swim in warmer waters I definitely would not recommend it. There are more than 40 beaches in Florianópolis, just choose another one. But campeche island is beautiful and it has trails with cave paintings.
Alternatively there are other boat trips you can do from Florianópolis that are historically related such as the boat trip to the Anhatomirim fortress (you take a boat from Canasvieiras beach) and they have tours in english and spanish (but I would inquire more about it in the anhatomirim part reviews in trip advisor).
Hope it helps you in your decision.
