We will be visiting in late July. How strict is the no shoulders and knees policy? Would shorts that cover the knees be acceptable? What about a modest dress that doesn't cover the wife's shoulders?

We were there 2 weeks ago. Knee length shorts are OK. No bare shoulders for either men or women. Enforced!

I recently visited and a lady on our tour had shorts on. The tour guide questioned her about it and she had to pull them further down her waist so they were below her knees so she could get in. If your wife plans to wear a sleeveless dress then it would be wise to bring a light scarf that she can use to cover her shoulders. It will get very hot in there with little to no air conditioner and thousands of people so make sure you wear breathable fabrics.

When we went this past May it was cooler so long pants and long sleve shirt. Capris are fine and tee shirt . If you want to wear a tank or off the shoulder top or dress I would suggest a scarf to cover your shoulders.

Be respectful and follow the dress code. Wear long pants and a top that covers shoulders.

They are very strict about it. You cannot have open shoulders. And the shorts need to be long shorts. Two women almost did not get in. Some people bought these paper Togo type things to cover up.

I would recommend to follow the pretty advertised rules for visiting the Vatican. Be prepared to "masses" of people during your visit - most respectful to the rules and some are disrespectful.
