I think this would depend on how much of the path you are planning on walking and what the weather is like at the time.
We both had waterproof walking shoes on which give good support, protect your feet if you step on sharp stones and keep your feet dry.
Some parts you can but boots would be better

Better with walking shoes or boots as if weather wet then dependant on where you wish to walk can be muddy. Also better to have a grip if climbing up some of the stepped /steep areas just off the path.
I wore light walking boots and felt more secure on the slippery cliffs than I would have otherwise. As others have said, it depends on the weather but as it has done practically nothing but rain for weeks on end now, so chances are that will continue into September.
A good set of trainers should be ok but it depends on the weather if its been dry or if it has poured the last 3 days
