We arrived in port Sunday 6/30/24 and I had a pain in my throat. By Monday I had a 103° fever. My husband started running a fever today 7/2/14 and we both tested positive for Covid. We are small business owners and now we have to keep our store closed indefinitely. I have MS and this illness is making it very hard for me to walk and I'm worried it may leave me crippled. Norwegian needs to take full responsibility for this and test all their Cruisers before they get on board. They're allowing people to get on the ship from all different parts of the world who could be carrying different strains of covid and they are boarding untested. Norwegian needs to step it up and test everyone so we can prevent this from ever happening to anyone again. I feel like ships are a giant petri dish. I've been on dozens of cruises and I have to say this will be my last one.

I think that Beth C (in a previous review) and I were on the same June cruise leaving Southampton to Barcelona. The Getaway itself was a very nice ship. The staff was great. The lack of communication about the ports cancelled and the absolutely pathetic embarkation and debarkation process were unimaginable. I have never endured so much frustration and PAID FOR IT!!! Another problem for me was how little knowledge the staff in the restaurants had about the food content. Oh, if you are vegetarian or gluten free, no problem. BUT ask about sugar-free/sugar content or, even worse, ask for wheat bread...well, the whole world stopped. I gave up asking.

Overall, we had a great vacation. However, this is NOT due to our experience with Norwegian. Were extremely disappointed in how things were managed. Three of our eight port calls were canceled. Two were replaced with new port calls of lesser interest and we were given an additional sea day the very first day in which it was too cold to utilize any of the outdoor water activities so there wasn't much for us to do with a child. We were not given adequate explanation as to why the first two ports were canceled. The third port cancellation was due to a port strike, so we do not fault Norwegian for this. However, they did not disclose this cancellation until we checked in for the cruise despite the strike being public knowledge for over a week prior. We had HORRIBLE experiences at several ports trying to get transportation. There were not enough taxis or cruise-provided methods to get from the ports and into town. As we disembarked, it took us 1.5 hours just to get off the boat and collect our luggage. It took another 1.5 hours to get a taxi and we stood in the direct sun with our baby during this time. The taxi driver said that he had never seen anything like it and that it was due to little to no communication from the ship to the taxi service (this is a large port that is used to accommodating thousands of people). The only shore excursions provided by Norwegian that we were even interested in were canceled when the ports were canceled. Additionally, we utilized the cruise doctor for our daughter. The clinic staff was great, but we paid ~$1000 for an exam, a flu test, and an over-the- counter antihistamine that typically costs less than $20. The exercise area was too small to accommodate the number of passengers. The outdoor running track was poorly placed as people had to use it to get to one of the restaurants. We spent a lot of our time in lines (getting on and off the boat, trying to get food, etc). Unless something dramatically changes, I do not foresee our family ever using Norwegian cruise lines again. I will say the ship service staff was great. We appreciated their friendliness, especially the Starbucks workers. However, this was not enough to override all of the negative aspects of our experience with this cruise line. We are blessed to be a family that is able to travel and we made the most of our time but I would warn others against booking with this company.

Larger ships have their place in offering popular stops for the masses. Norwegian lists the capacity at 3963, but the MC offered that the ship had 4400 people on board. Without getting into safety issues, this also means that customer service took a dive from Norwegian's standards. On a two-week transatlantic cruise we had several dinners where our order was forgotten, requests failed to be granted, and many, many staff appeared exhausted, frustrated, and overwhelmed. I felt that we were a burden for the staff. We tried to enjoy the repeated entertainment offerings without becoming bored, and enjoyed our anniversary despite feeling like we didn't belong.

So your thinking of a cruise on Norwegian Getaway or any Norwegian cruise ship. Here are a few tips that might assist you! No.1 DONT!!! If you are over 60 unless your with the family ( which we were) If you don't agree with No.1, read on: OK so you have paid for your cruise, they have given you a drinks package, and gratuities included...brilliant No. 2 Water, your thirsty, middle of the night, grab the water...NO, sorry not included in the drinks package! Pay 6.95 dollars plus 20% gratuity per bottle. OR buy 6 x 1ltre bottles for 29 dollars before you board. Fancy a cappuccino? No sorry, that's a Starbucks package at 249 dollars per person!! Or individual cuppa: 4.45 dollars plus 20% gratuity. No.3 The food, at its best its about as good as a pre packed meal from a supermarket, at its worst, head for the buffet, scramble for a table, Enjoy the canteen offerings. The speciality restaurants, The Bistro is quite good, and the Steak house, make sure you buy a package!! Go on then breakfast in bed, yes no problem 8 dollars!! Yes and 20% gratuities added. No.4 The cabin, hope you haven't got a few pounds on? Balcony cabin fits 2 chairs facing each other and a small box! Eat your food on the bed! TV, fancy chilling with a movie?10 dollars, on an old 28" TV Bathroom, and toilet thank god the toilet paper is free!! Bad news it's 1 ply rough on the tush quality! Cheap hand soap, body wash, take your own. Cleaned once a day, mirror never cleaned,.little things, but just slap dash clean. Entertainment, Oh dear, hit and miss sorry, and all the games around the atrium for the kids 2.45 dollars a shot! O' Sheerhans bar, queue, and listen to what's happening below from the squeaky screaming down the microphone hostess!! Loud, loud and not necessary! On the good, some of the music was excellent! The tribute to Fleetwood Mac was really outstanding. Pool Area....! Can't find the words...Just awful. The Staff: absolutely brilliant, kudos to them, what they endure with a smile...big shout out they were so good. In general we just wanted it to end!! Young families probably loved it!!
