We took this trip a while ago and just booked another cruise with HAL, so I thought I'd write a review! Our 10-day Eastern Caribbean cruise was my first cruise and my husband's 3rd or 4th. He'd been on Carnival and Royal Caribbean previously. He says that the Nieuw Amsterdam was by far the nicest ship he'd been on, the food was best he'd had on a cruise, and our room was much nicer as well. We chose HAL because of the good reviews about the food. Yep, that's right. We knew about the lack of "nightlife" prior and that didn't bother us at all. We're in our early 30s and I was about 6 weeks pregnant at the time (cue green face). After a horrible night at a horrible air bnb in Fort Lauderdale, we had no trouble getting on the boat. We were really surprised at how large our inside cabin was. Looking back, we may have been upgraded. Our room had a couch and there was a lot of room around the bed. We explored for a while, played a little "horse" on the basketball court, ate some pizza, booked an excursion on our phones quickly before we left port and unpacked. CABIN: We were on deck 6, pretty close to the mid-ship elevators. There was no ambient noise at all. At most, we could hear people walking back to there rooms, which is common in any hotel. There was plenty of storage for both of us to fully unpack . The bed was super comfy and the bathroom was really roomy. No trouble at all with counter space or space in the shower. The water pressure was great. Our cabin was always so clean. We only met our cabin attendants the first day and didn't see them again, but they were very kind when we met. The TV had on demand movies!!! We are weird and don't have a TV in our bedroom at home, so this was a fun luxury. We watched a movie in bed every night and loved every second. The only complaint was that the A/C didn't get super cold at night, which was a bummer. It sometimes felt a little stuffy. But not too bad! FOOD: The food met expectations. I knew it wouldn't be Michelin quality, but overall the flavors were there, nothing was bland and they get an A for creativity. We ate a lot of meals in the MDR (all the dinners, all but 2 breakfasts and 2-3 lunches), which helped with moderation. I learned pretty quick that most of the vegetables didn't seem to be cooked from fresh, which is understandable, so I picked meals accordingly (ones that had to come with fresh vegetables or vegetables I didn't mind if they were canned). The desserts were very good and the fresh bread with dinner was awesome. Our servers in the MDR were lovely and we got to know them pretty well. We felt lucky to meet them and have that connection on the ship. The food on the Lido deck was good, too. The salad bar is great, we both really enjoyed that. There are lines during busy times, but that's because a lot of food is made to order and the staff serves the food to prevent spread of norovirus. The pizza outside at the aft pool and the Dive in grill at the Lido deck pool were very good too. It's a lot of food. It's hard to eat it all without feeling stuffed all the time. ENTERTAINMENT: The only thing we went to every night was the Lincoln Center Stage. It was lovely! The room is very small so usually had to either get there early or stand in the hallway. Our dinner time was 8pm, so we would go listen beforehand. We also watched the BBC Earth presentation and thought the live music was such a cool addition. I went to an America's Test Kitchen presentation and it was fun! ATK is already one of my favorite things, so it was fun to see a live demonstration. We did wander down through the Billboard Music thing/dueling pianos? on the last night and it sounded really fun. We wish we had gone! PORTS: Grand Turk had recently been hit by the hurricane that destroyed most of the Bahamas and it was obvious. We weren't really interested in the port area, so we rented a golf cart and drove into town. We went to the museum there, I think the National Museum? It was small, so the staff just kind of talked to you about the exhibits if you asked. It was cool to learn about the history of Grand Turk. We found some local beers for my husband and headed back to the ship. Next stop was St. Thomas...I made my husband walk from the ship all the way up to Blackbeard's Castle. Which was closed because of hurricane damage!!!! On the way, someone stopped us and told us we were in a really unsafe area and made sure we knew not to turn off the road we were on. Oops! We hiked back down and mostly it's just a lot of jewelry shops. We had a nice lunch of conch (recommend!) at a cool restaurant and headed back to the ship via a different route. It's a super long walk, just FYI. Next stop was San Juan which we loved. We had booked a tour called "Flavor of San Juan". It was basically a tour of San Juan's history and Puerto Rican culture while stopping for snacks at all the hippest little coffee shops and restaurants that serve only Puerto Rican offerings. (Just a side note: we loved this tour so much, we booked a food tour a few months later when we went to Tuscany and it was just not as good. If you're in San Juan, do the "Flavors of Old San Juan" food tour.) It was just us and two others from the cruise and we had a great time. The tour guide recommended a little bar that served locally brewed beer, so headed there after the tour. Annddd, we got back to the ship in time for dinner! The last stop was Half Moon Cay. By this time, I had full blown early pregnancy nausea and for some reason, the beach and the clear, aquamarine water was like a balm to my soul. If not for needing to eat every 2 hours, I would have stayed on in the water all day. The food was really great in Half Moon Cay as well. I still talk about how great it was and my husband is like "I think it's just cause you were pregnant." Whatever, I loved it. I had a burger and a hot dog and the sauces and veggies on them were just great. We did have to walk a long way down the beach to find some shady beach chairs, but that wasn't a big deal to us. We left after lunch and the wait on the tender boat was pretty long, but the wind after we got going helped after the wait. We thought this was a great vacation. We didn't spend any money on the boat and didn't feel like that took away anything from our experience. We are more chill and knew going into it that HAL is notable for serving an older crowd, but we liked that. We were able to eat meals with couples older than our grandparents and just get to know them. It's a special experience. If you want a quiet, easy vacation, HAL is a great option. Oh and the fitness center is decent to great! We worked out every morning after breakfast. The only thing is, if you're a runner, it's SO hard to run while sailing! I had no idea and it was a bummer, but there was always a free elliptical. There were people running and I do not know how they did it. I couldn't stay on the treadmill. Something I think would have been fun is to have done one of the yoga or spin classes...if anyone's done those, I'd love to read your review! Of course, it's what you make it, but we loved the ship and our time on it. Can't wait to cruise again with HAL!

Our family cruise on a regular basis. We have been on over 30 cruises and 6-7 different cruise lines. The horrible experience happened back in Aug 2019. We gave them many chances to deal with this, but they failed miserably. I could not get myself to write the story as I did not want to relive the unpleasant experience. But with the COVID 19 unfolding, I feel obligated to share my story as both my husband and I are healthcare workers. I believed a management team with poor judgement is dangerous. For those who may not know, Holland America is now part of Carnival who also owns Princess Cruise. COVID 19 has now effected many passangers on Princess and Holland America. This is my story.... We have cruised on Nieuw Amsterdam when it was just one year old, a lot has changed since. In Aug 2019, we cruised on Nieuw Amsterdam again to Alaska. This is a multi generation family trip with my father-in-law in his eighties. Halfway into the cruise, a man in his 70's decided to sit in front of my daughter by taking her footstool of the lounge chair in the observation deck. There were chairs available elsewhere, though not in front of the window. When I occasionally stand up and take pictures near him. He decided to take a picture of my teenage daughter (who was about 5-6 feet away from him) to spite me. This disturbed my daughter and when he was confronted, he walked away quickly. My daughter asked him to delete the picture which he refused. I notified security immediately. A lady with a baby sitting nearby gave me her information and told me to let security know she would be the witness. The head of security, officer "JEFF" decided the 70's year old has issue with his knees and was totally justified to do what he did. Though this 70 year old did not use a cane or walker , lined up at buffet for his food and ran quickly away from the scene. He did not require to delete the picture as the law protects those who wants to take anyone's picture in public as officer "JEFF" has his picture taken many a time. We had to make sure someone was with my daughter at all time for the rest of the trip as we did not feel safe anymore. When my daughter and I disembark early in the morning with no one in the line-up, instead of letting us go through the rope and get off directly with our luggage, he instructed us to walk the full length of the ship to get to the exit. He was nasty and bias till the end and treated us with disrespect. My husband wrote to the customer service after the trip. One message was left on our phone that they try to contact us. When my husband e-mail him again, there was no response. I had put this behind me until now. When the nightmare on the cruise ships starts to unfold and stories begin to surface on how they handle the quarantine, I begin to feel scare for those on board. Prior to my trip, my coworker went on a Holland America cruise and had a complaint. I went on my trip since my experience before was fine. I was wrong. I would not choose to cruise with this company for now. Perhaps one day, management would improve , but until then stay safe. I will end here, as I will need to fight in the front line with my husband against COVID 19. In the main time, keep your social distance, wash your hands frequently and listen to good professional advice.

Sailed Nieuw Amsterdam 2 weeks back to back Western Caribbean Voyage and Tropical Caribbean Voyage. Splurged this time with a Neptune Suite. Wonderful accommodation and large balcony. The Indonesian crew are the best. Ports are good. Seven ports include Half Moon Cay, Falmouth in Jamaica, Grand Cayman Islands, Cozumel in Mexico, Key West in Florida, Turks and Caicos Islands, and Amber Cove, D.R. Stores a little repetitive, high-end jewellery, but usually local merchandise from the locals as well. Easy embarkation and well organized dis-embarkation. Have sailed H.A.L. many times, but glad this time Neptune.

Let me begin this letter with my conclusion. My wife and I have just finished the worse cruise we have ever taken - January 4th on the Nieuw Amsterdam. By the way this was our 16th cruise 5 of which have been on Holland America cruise ships. Why was this cruise the worst we have taken? We booked this cruise based on the itinerary to Saint Martin. This ship had propulsion problems causing the ship to change ports of call eliminating St Martin which was of primary reason for booking. In addition and most important the propulsion issue caused our cabin 6162 to vibrate throughout the 7 day cruise.when I say vibrate this includes the entire cabin including lying in bed trying to sleep- sleeping was a significant problem the entire cruise. I contacted the customer service manager who came to cabin and agreed this was a issue because of the population problem. He indicated the ship was safe and we should not be concerned. He did not have another cabin as the ship was full.My take on his comment was as follows. First your company should never go to sea without redundancy. With one propeller not functioning that is not redundancy. Second and more important is the resultant discomfort of the passenger. Holland America did not take passenger discomfort into consideration nor analyze the effect on the ship and to the passenger operating with one propeller. The company knew there was a problem since the ship was taken out of service on December 17 and cancelled a cruise. It is my understanding the ship will again go into dry dock on February 1 for repairs. Not fixing this ship caused our vacation to be ruined, our money wasted and faith in Holland America diminished. I do not know who makes decisions for your company but I felt someone at your level should be made aware of the situation that existed. Your company did not take passenger comfort into account, this is wrong and should have been corrected. Will we travel on Holland America again? At this point I would have to say no. I work too hard for my money, I look forward to vacations and spend my money for the value I receive - on this cruise there was negative value. If you want to retain us as customers you will have to convince me why I should book other cruises with Holland America, it’s your decision.
