The Kuelap site is accessible by road/hike or cable-car/hike. It's well worth a visit. Only part of the full site is open to the public but what is accessible is extremely interesting, much of is well preserved, and the guides are very informative. One day, this site will be another Machu Picchu - get there before the rest of the world arrives!

Impressive canyon just about 15 minutes by taxi from Chachapoyas. The "entrance" fee is only 5 soles (about $1.50). On the way back we couldn't get a taxi, but there is a "colectivo" (van carrying passengers) that comes every 20 minutes (4 soles per passenger).

We drove with our rental car to San Bartolo, parked on the main square, bought our tickets and walked to the site on a very nicely “paved” path. It’s an easy 40 minutes walk to the cliffs and tombs.
There is a view point and you can get quite close to the tombs although you cannot go right up to them. It’s definitely worth it.
The drive bit from Yerbabuana to San Bartolo is about 18km of unpaved road in average condition, so be prepared for a jumpy ride.

We booked what turned out to be a 12 hour tour. We left chachapoyas at 8am for an hour drive to the caves for a 45 minute walk into the dark cave. We were provided lights and boots. The cave is peaceful and awe inspiring. We then went to a good lunch. The drive from lunch was an hour up and around a beautiful mountain side. Peru is amazing! The hike to the sarcophagus was about a half an hour down hill. The site is awesome and beautiful. It was $25 a person for lunch and a ride to both spots. Our tour kind was kind and spoke Spanish and enough English to work with.
My favorite trip in Peru so far.

We had an amazing cañoning/rappel tour next to the Yumbilla waterfalls. If you like nature and water you will enjoy the hiking and the rappel in the fog forest (primary forest!!). It is still a real insider tip!

If I had known bevor that there is so much to explore in the surroundings of Cuispes I'd have stayed some days there to do more hiking and rappel tours.

I can highly recommend our guide
    Agliberto Santillán (+51941873972).
He is a real pioneer in promoting cañoning/rappel tours in the area near Cuispes.

Agliberto and his colleague (there are always two guides for safety reason) let us downn a rope at a waterfall of 45 m. All of us really enjoyed the experience and we felt very secure because the guides are real experts.

The tours/waterfalls where you can realize the rappel depends on time availability and experience.

We went from Chachapoyas with bus to Pedro Ruiz (5 soles per person). Here, Agilberto had already organized the transport with mototaxi to Cuispes (15 soles per 3 persons).

In Cuispes you have to register and pay an entrance (10 soles per person). From Cuispes we took again a mototaxi with our guides to the entrance of the path to the waterfalls (15 soles per 3 persons).

Take enough time there to enjoy Cuispes!

This viewpoint is just over 1 km from the center of Chachapoyas' plaza de Armas (elevation difference 90 m). If you follow Salamanca road towards the west you will eventually reach a staircase at the end of which turn right. Halfway the staircase there is the Well (Pozo) of Yanayacu.

The mirador is at a very small parque. Often some youths gather here at the end of the afternoon. Luya Urco provides the best view over Chachapoyas and the surrounding mountains. The Plaza de Armas with the cathedral is clearly visible.

Free admission. The area is safe. The whole route to Luya Urco is marked.

Other reviewers mix up this viewpoint with the one at Huancas over the Sonche canyon 10 km away.

There are over 1800 'distritos' in Peru of which Huancas with a population of just over 1300 inhabitants is one of the smallest. It is located 8 km (5 miles) north of Chachapoyas. The main attraction are the viewpoints in the vicinity of the hamlet of which Mirador del Cañon de Huancas Sonche (1 km towards the east) is the most spectacular.

I walked up and down to Huancas from Chachapoyas along the dirt road. Alternatively there is a colectivo from near the mercado in Chachapoyas (5 Soles one way).

White and dark brown are the dominant colors of the many historic buildings in central Chachapoyas. Most houses have tiled roofs that hangover the streets providing at least some protection against the rains to pedestrians.

A severe earthquake (7.2 on the Richter scale) severely damaged the historic center in 1928. What can now be observed is mostly the result of extensive reconstruction. Overall a pleasant place to visit. I liked the fact at least one major street (Jiron Amazonas) is now a pedestrian zone.

What I missed most, is that streets are not marked. Orientation is problematic. However, with just 32,000 inhabitants Chachapoyas is relatively small, so the problem is manageable. People are friendly, do know street names and are always willing to help out.

We went to visit Laguna Pomacochas with our young son. The weather was so-so but we still enjoyed the visit to this lake. The view is great and the trip in the boat was fun (although not especially espectacular). The lakeside tourist center has gardens, a playground and several restaurants. It's a good place to spend a relaxing day.

On your way back from Gocta Falls to Chachapoyas you should ask your guide to make a short stop here. The 'petroglifos' are a series of rock carvings in pristine condition located right next to the main road.

Few locals seem to be believe that a miracle took place here. According to legend the second archbishop of Lima, Toribio de Mogrovejo when visiting in the 1590s struck a rock here with his staff and see a well starting delivering fresh water to the city! To become a saint miracles have to be attributed to a person. These were often made up. Anyway Toribio, was declared Santo Toribio.

The structure of the well as such is not very special and defunct. I even once passed it without noticing it. It is one of the few places in town where the authorities placed an info board in both Spanish and English. It is worth while to walk further uphill towards the Iglesia Santo Toribio De Mogrovejo, not to see the church but for the magnificent view. The mirador near the well is less interesting as you are still not very high up.
