Beautiful church beside the sea. Very peaceful inside. Loved the ceiling and unusual baptismal font that looked like a large sea shell.

Specially in stormy days it is outstanding to see the sea strength against the rocks. At first you don't realize from where the waves come in but soon you find out.

This here is a lovely Promenade facing the Cantabrian Sea. Traffic-free, lots of space, wide sidewalks, lots of green and a playground for the smaller visitors.

In spring 2021 the town was pretty empty due to Covid-19 even though it was a picture perfect sunny day. We enjoyed strolling on this boardwalk here. Some shops and a good number of restaurants with a view are located here (we had lunch in a backstreet though - good authentic spanish food).

The "Castro Urdiales" letters are located here as well, makes a good photo op with the Castillo-Faro de Santa Ana and the impressive Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción as a background. These two landmarks are really a sight to behold. Even though some cranes block them partly right now.

Underneath this lovely park is the easiest and best option to park your car. A good, safe and reasonably priced parking lot.

It's a lovely town and this park/promenade is the heart of it. A lovely little walk.

Just a short stroll from the Iglesia de Santa Maria is this impressive Castle and Lighthouse commanding views over the stunning coast and town and a Roman Arch/Bridge thrown in for free! There appeared to be an elevator for access, although we did not go inside.

There isn't much left of the church but it does offer great views of Castro. Worth a quick climb just to look out.

This small park is located on the headland beyond Playa de Bazomar. It’s a pleasant stroll along the seafront promenade and over the estuary inlet to reach it. You can see it clearly from the harbour area and it actually looks larger than in reality. However, when you get there you’ll often find it busy with locals using the fixed exercise machines or just out walking with family. The park is well maintained and kept tidy plus you get a great view back towards the old town area. There’s a barrier at the top end with views over the very small cove of Playa Arcisero and further along the coast.

We decide to leave Bilbao for a couple of hours before we drove back to get our ferry home. This place is about a half hour up the A8 towards Santander. Loads of good underground parking and plenty of places to look around from the Marina, to the towns back streets to the cafes and restaurants. Great photo opportunity as well.

Superb beach, clean, easy nearby parking, showers & toilets nearby, plus a couple of bars / cafes that do simple food & snacks. No shade on the beach (there may be during the peak season).
The beach slopes gently to the sea. The sea is shallow to 3m out, when there is a shelf beyond which it drops to 1.5m (approx.) deep, the it gets gently deeper

By car you’ll see signs to the cemetery on N-634 leading out of Castro Urdiales in Santander direction. There’s a small chapel just inside the gates and an information panel in both Spanish and English on the exterior to right of entrance. This is a replacement Cemetery, planned in 1885 and built with public contributions. It’s laid out in parallel lanes (makes it easy to navigate round) with numerous family burial plots and a number of ornate tombs/crypts. The grounds are also a resting place for cats (see my pic!). I would say it’s not really worth the effort of a visit unless you have an interest in burial architecture. There’s a large skateboard park on the approach and being an isolated spot I’m not sure I’d like to leave my car unattended for too long (I walked up from town).

We cycled some of this via verde route, unfortunately there was a lot of major work being carried out at various points and some of it was completely closed. The part we were able to ride was very good and we would like to return to ride again when the complete route has reopened.
