- Semaan D. MakaryEhden, Lebanon542 contributionsIn the old city centre of Maribor, also called Lent, in front of the Old Vine House, grows over 450-year-old Žametovka or Modra kavčina vine variety. It is included in the Guinness Book of records as the oldest vine in the world, which still bears fruit annually.
The Old Vine was planted by the end of the Middle Ages, when Maribor was sieged by the Turks. It survived despite the wrathful battles that raged around it, since it was once part of the city walls. Even the fires in the late Middle Ages could not destroy it, not even the vine louse, which caused most of the vineyards in Europe to wither, nor the ally bombing of the city.
Today the Old Vine is the only plant with its own space in the Old Vine House.Written 6 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The oldest part of the cellar spreading over 15,000 m2 and boasting 2.1 km long underground passages was built in 1847. Wooden barrels, concrete tankers, bottles with wine patina, etc. have a total capacity of 3 million litres! The most precious particularity is definitively the wine archive where bottles of the best vintages are stored!
I was there solo and couldn’t wait for a tour, so I went inside and i had the wholeeee place to myself, which was awesome.
The girl on the reception area was extremely polite and helpful.Written 6 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - periandroLuxembourg City, Luxembourg7 838 contributionsThe Maribor Cathedral is an imposing construction whose origins date back to the twelfth century. It lies in a quiet place by a nice fountain giving a feeling of joy, and of energetic and soft peacefulness. The square Anton Martin Slomšek is where the church can be found.
Originally the cathedral was built in romanesque style, though it was later remodelled in gothic style, which is the prevailing one nowadays. Within the pertinent remodelling in the latter style, among other things the nave vault was transformed into a ribbed one. There are as well however some baroque elements, the most conspicuous one being the baroque bell tower, built in the first quarter of the seventeenth century. The outer part of the last mentioned element consists basically of four segments, the second one from the bottom reaching approximately the same height as that of the nave vault. The bells are on the third level and on each one of the four sides of the fourth level there is a clock. That segment is surrounded by a balustrade as in a balcony. Altogether the tower is eye-catching, the more so on account of the tin dome on that last level. The tower shows different brown tonalities. The whole causes a very attractive architectural effect. The rest of the outer façade of the Cathedral is white chalk painted with the exception of the window frames and ornate elements which are brown.
Inside the temple has a solemn appearance. It's a three-nave church, the central nave being separated from the former by rather short and robust square columns whose doric inspiration capitals are rather plain. The arches resting on the columns are semicircular shaped – typical of the romanesque style – on the right hand side of the edifice looking at the high altar, whereas those on the other side are a bit pointed. All of them are very low in comparison to the nave walls. In the middle of every two columns there is a brown painted tall pilaster reaching the nave vault where they branch out into ribs, thus forming a ribbed vault in the pattern common to most gothic churches.
The chancel is richly decorated. It's a bright part of the temple interior, at least brighter than the nave since the pertinent stain glass windows are larger and lower than those of the nave. The chancel vault is lower than that of the nave but higher than those of the aisles. The three of them (chancel and side aisles) are also ribbed vaults, as that of the nave just described. The high altar is very nice. The upper part of the altarpiece comprises six niches, three on each side of the shrine, with gothic pointed arches. As many statuettes of saints are placed in the niches concerned. Above that piece, in the center, there is a statue of Christ and one of a musician angel on each side end thereof. Behind those angels, attached to the apse wall, there is respectively another angel statue bigger than the former ones. The whole constitutes a beautiful ensemble worth being observed. The stalls arranged in two sets of stepped rows along each side of the choir, facing each other, are also very impressive.
The pulpit, made basically of dark brown wood, is somewhat simple but pretty. Its platform outer part is adorned with a gilded saint statue on each visible side, except on that at the front, where there are two of such statues, each one of those statues being separated by a little pillar in baroque style topped by Corinthian capitals. The shelter bears also some nice gilded ornaments, and on it there is the statue of a handsome angel with gilded wings. It's therefore an interesting element in that church.
Apart from the foregoing there are likewise in that church fantastic side altars and great pictures hanging from its walls worth of being in a museum. It's altogether a marvellous monument today mainly in gothic style whose visit is highly recommended.Written 12 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's in fact one of the most remarkable monuments in the stated city, lying right in its center, by the square Grajski trg, in Graiska ulica, 2, street which cuts the castle complex in two halves.
The Maribor Castle was built in the last quarter of the fifteenth century; with the exception of the chapel and the Knights Hall constructed in the seventeenth century following the conversion of the building into a nobleman's residence upon its acquisition by the Counts Khiessl.
The Regional Museum houses diverse type of items in a very attractive display of art and culture whose visit is recommended particularly on account of the high interest aroused by the items concerned integrating several different collections on the basis of their nature including, among others, archaeological, art, ethnological, apothecary, furniture and costume groups.
The artifacts included in the archaeological collection are extremely pleasing. They date back to the Stone Age to the Early Middle Age. Attention is caught particularly by some grave finds consisting mainly in cups originating from Maribor, Pobrežje, Spodnje and Radvanje; an amphora found also in Pobrežje, and glass objects from the Roman cemeteries in Zgornja Hajdina are likewise of utmost interest.
The art collection is really fantastic. It comprehends religious and secular works of art from the fourteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Among the paintings one can observe some from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. The works by European baroque artists are of a particular interest within that subsection. The painting depicting Helena Fourment (Venus in Fur Coat), consisting in a replica by A. Womak of a Rubens's portrait is outstanding. Likewise a picture of a Girl in Green Biedermeier Dress from 1891 by an unknown artist is a pretty artwork. As far as sculptures are concerned, the statues of St. Catherine and St. Apollonia (circa 1480/1490), from St. Ursula church are spectacular, as well as those representing St. Zachariah and St. Elisabeth (made in 1750), from the parish church of St. Joseph, and that of St. Barbara (second half of the seventeenth century) from the church dedicated to the saint concerned (Smarje pri Jelšah).
The ethnological collection can also be deemed a rich pageantry. It embraces some objects from the Alpine and Pannonian ethnological regions. Hamlets, essential parts of buildings, furnishing as well as crafts and other items are in display in that section. In addition, products made of wood and metal, pottery, textiles and otherwise can be watched in the section concerned, which also includes some electronic home appliances produced in the twentieth century. Everything in that collection tells us about man's industrial capabilities in different periods of historical evolution.
For the sake of brevity not all the remaining Museum collections are hereby described. Nevertheless, owing to its outstanding character, the apothecary collection cannot be omitted. It's a fantastic one whose items call up past and better times. They started being gathered in the fifties of the past century and most of them come from chemists' in Maribor, Lendava and other Slovenian cities, as well as from the erstwhile monastic pharmacy in Olinje. The collection arouses special attention thus being the most important collection of its kind in Slovenia. Valuable apothecary books from the seventeenth century are comprised in it. The fact of being in the so called oficina (apothecary workshop) makes one feel thrilled at the sight of the apothecary vessels there displayed.
Reference to the costume collection cannot be shunned, particularly to the uniform which belonged to Tito. At the sight of that uniform, calling up the greatness of the country when its owner was the ruler, one cannot avoid being startled.
The view which can be contemplated from the covered terrace, from where a large number of important buildings in the city are within sight, deserves also a special mention. The chapel is a peculiar temple where nobody can enter but the priest on special occasions for celebrating religious ceremonies. Its interior can be seen from an inner window. It houses very nice and valuable mural paintings and a marvellous statue of the Virgin behind the high altar.
The Maribor Regional Museum is therefore a fabulous place where one can learn a lot on History and other interesting aspects concerning that precious Slovenian city and its surrounding area. That's why it ought at any rate to be visited while in the mentioned city.Written 22 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
