- Freulein SAthens, Greece153 contributionsHoly place, full of history and holiness.Very beautiful cathedral, red carpet for those who want to enter the cathedral on knees. But very crowded, you must have great patience to wait in huge line.Written 14 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 1DownhillerLincoln, UK156 contributionsFrom Classical Greece to the present day, marble has been the material for some of humanity’s finest art and architecture. Michelangelo’s famous line (‘I saw the angel in the marble and carved until he was free’) suggests artistic skill and inspiration are all that’s needed. This brilliant little museum gives a fuller truth.
Starting with the geology that gives Greece dozens of prized varieties of marble we see the brutal and often dangerous job of its extraction, and how craft and technical skills must back up artistic vision to set the angel free.
And all this through the story of marble, those who quarried it and those who fashioned it on one small Greek island.
One of the best museums you’ll visit - in such an unexected place!Written 3 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Volax village is located in a strange and unique site full of huge granite boulder formations and natural monoliths of different shapes. You can stop at Myrsini (Teresa) and Falatados for food and drinks. Then, take your car and swim at Kolimvithra.
Amazing views, very interesting rock formations, vineyards, traditional villages. Totally recommended!Written 12 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LiiWarsaw, Poland11 contributionsMy fav beach on the island. Not very crowded. No beach fascilities but pure nature; marble rocks and silver sand. Easy to reach by the car. A bit shadowed from trees. The water is crystal blue, sandy and clean bottom. Hidden from windWritten 11 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Stewartclan5Calgary, Canada344 contributionsWe are staying near Dio Choria and the 70Km winds were howling so we decided to take a road trip and weren’t disappointed! The beach was lovely, the wind reduced, the natural shade was lovely and it wasn’t that busy. The drive was only ~15kms but still takes a good hour to get there. The scenery is spectacular and you can see so much of the island. A good day spent avoiding the wind!Written 19 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Panioann77Larnaca, Cyprus754 contributionsOur Lady of Tinos (Greek: Παναγία Ευαγγελίστρια της Τήνου, "The All-Holy Bringer of Good News", and Μεγαλόχαρη της Τήνου is the major Marian shrine in Greece. It is located in the town of Tinos on the island of Tinos.
The complex is built around a miraculous icon which according to tradition was found after the Virgin appeared to the nun Pelagia and revealed to her the place where the icon was buried. The icon is widely believed to be the source of numerous miracles. It is by now almost completely encased in silver, gold, and jewels, and is commonly referred to as the "Megalócharē" ("[She of] Great Grace") or simply the "Chárē Tēs" ("Her Grace"). By extension the church is often called the same, and is considered a protectress of seafarers and healer of the infirm.
The icon was found on the very first days after the creation of the modern Greek State, henceforth Our Lady of Tinos was declared the patron saint of the Greek nation. The icon was at the time thought to be the handwork of St. Luke the Evangelist, a possibility that can neither be confirmed nor ruled out, and a nationwide fund collection was carried out for the building of a church to house it.
The church was designed by the architect from Tinos, Efstratios Emmanuel Kalonaris in the Renaissance style and was inaugurated in 1830. Since then it constitutes the major Christian pilgrimage in Greece, equal to what is Lourdes in France or Fatima in Portugal. The church receives a vast number of donations in silver and gold votives each year; these are auctioned and used for charities.
The church is officially dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The major feast of the church, however, is on 15 August when the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) is commemorated by the Greek Orthodox Church, following the strong tradition of the Aegean Islands where the Dormition is grandly celebrated in mid-August as the principal summer feast.
The second finding of the icon took place on December 18th 1842, according to the Old Church Orthodox calendar used by all of the Orthodox Church until 1924 in Greece, and still used by the minority who didn't join the New Calendarist schism, corresponding to 31st December in the current civil calendar used as the liturgical calendar by the New Calendarist schismatics.Written 18 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This is a relatively small beach, not due to its stretch, but due to its width, somewhat only 5-6 metres width of sand area. So everybody's just sitting next to each other. Other than that, most of the beach has trees where one can sit under the shadow (but all of them are captured by families already). If you can stand the shouting and being thrown sand by kids, enjoy. We just left ;)Written 23 August 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- VassilisTsAthens, Greece808 contributionsVery convenient beach in Porto Agios Ioannis area, app 10 min drive from Tinos port. Beach is app 300 m long and it has sandy seabed and very clear water. It’s also protected from north winds quite well. Dark and very think sand of the beach does not offer the best experience when out of water!Written 1 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
