What travellers are saying
- nonedickynone147 contributionsAttractive valley and views with gardens couple of places to get snacks and drinks. Very hilly so wear good shoes and be prepared to face a climb.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Calin STargu Mures, Romania175 contributionsMadeira is a special place on our planet. It is known for it's hiking. Pico do Arieiro is a beautiful start. Easy accessible with the car, has a webcam to monitor the weather conditions, so it's easy to do for everyone. I would recommend to at least walk a bit on the path towards Pico Ruivo, to get more close to nature.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Louise GCoventry, UK28 contributionsThis was a great experience, the que seemed fairly long but went quickly. I had seen that if the cruise ship is in its extremely busy. The cruise ship wasn't in.
The cable car is modern and goes at a nice pace. The views are amazing, even if the top is in the clouds.
The windows are reflective so it's hard to take photos. Just enjoy it!
Once at the top there's plenty to do, there's the taboggans, a beautiful church and gardens. There is also the opportunity to go onto a 2nd cable car to the botanical gardens. We didn't do this.
It can be a little chilly at the top so make sure you have a jumper.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - livelifeHampshireRingwood, UK156 contributionsJust beautiful. We stopped for 90 minutes as part of our excursion. I’d have liked longer as it felt a bit rushed when having lunch and looking around. The views are stunning.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- LilacwheatyNottingham, UK854 contributionsWe drove as far as could go, lots of parking at end and on roadside for a mile towards, but very busy, so we could not actually walk this area. Instead we retraced our steps and found a much less crowded wild cliff edge walk, that was enough for us on a squally day. Thinkk it was brown ignposted as a MiradouroWritten 1 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- nsander219Chelmsford, UK628 contributionsFebruary is not the time to see any garden at its best. However there were many plants blooming and it is a very pleasant walk around with superb views down to Funchal.
One point is that it is on a fairly steep slope and some of the paths could do with some maintenance.
Also it struck us that few of the cruise passengers seemed to make it this far - a bonus.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A 45 minute walk throught the history and making of their drink is well put together. A Premium Tour gets you two samples to taste plusd your ticket gets you 10% off with airport delivery. We enjoyed it.Written 5 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- TheTravellingTurtlesLondon, UK52 contributionsNot being hikers we were slightly apprehensive about whether we’d be able to do this hike or not, especially in the hot sun. Need not have worried, as we made it, and it was well worth the visit.
Did the route from ‘Archada do Teixera’ (2.8km each way). The views were stunning and depending on cloud movement you get a different view going up vs coming down.
Definitely take plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and long sleeved loose fitting clothes. It was super hot when we went out, with little/no wind. There is a refreshment hut 3/4 the way along the journey, which is most welcome to grab a snack and cool drink.Written 6 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Down in the valley is just as nice with peaks all around and nice places for coffee and to relaxWritten 24 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Instead of having to climb back up the same crowded path you can go through the 800 m tunnel (which is an experience in itself). After the tunnel there is a beautiful scenic view and a short hike to a different pick up point where the driver will be waiting for you. Believe me, it’s much more enjoyable to do it this way.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sari S77 contributionsAmazing! Views were so amazing! Paths are well informed, you can’t get lost in here. Just following the path by levadas, you’lö find your way from start to end. We took easy path, 11km and it took about 3h time. And we took pictures and two brakes as well. Easy it is not to walk, but seen few old couples on the way too :)Written 30 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
