A 1km running loop with stations for exercise. Nice quiet park in the middle of the city. Good for relaxing too

Large plaza with many restaurants and shops. Underneath is a huge parking lot and you would never know! There are so many roads which lead to this central area.

Huge towering church. The inside is not nearly as ornate as I had expected for a church in an ancient city. It looked formidable from the outside.

I have gone a couple times. Is little and with good sound. It preserves the decoration and the architecture. So you can feel the magic that the theater have in the past with the detail decoration, the red velvet, etc.
The bad thing is that the cheap tickets are going to place you in quite uncomfortable sits.

We had read a lot about this church. It is indeed very old. It was raining when we went and that added to the charm. Plus the number of tourists were less! It is a stones throw away from Plaza Espana. We are very glad we could see the inside of the church too. But we left soon as a service was to start.

This church is remarkably preserved and well-maintained. My tour in 2016 took us here and walked us around the grounds. I was blown away by how the architecture withstood the test of time. (clicked march 2019 because i couldnt go back to 2016 in the app, visit was 2016)

We walked one afternoon to this place and came to a completely desolate concrete area with modern architecture. We climbed the tower, to be told 'solo resturante'. We took some photos and made our way back, past the beautiful rainbow bridge and overhead crossing (which smelled of urine). What was the hype about this place? Did we visit at a wrong time?

We reached here just before closing time. Each crypt has been decorated to show the wealth of the family. Some are in ruins, but the ones with marble carvings...especially the one having angel, must be inside a museum!

This building is located in one of the old squares of the town, uphill slightly from the main square and main shopping streets. Nice area to stroll around, both in daytime but also after dark.

The lighthouse and the surrounding area is nothing spectacular, but it is among the nicer areas in Aviles. You get a nice view of the inlet to Aviles harbor and some seaside views.

But if you choose the coastal route going west, you will find more scenic places, towns and beaches.

We went to Aviles for the Celsius 232 convention. The husband was speaking there, and we had a five day visit, but there was lots of time to do other things. Whenever we visit a new place, we always like to take in the local museum; they generally offer an insight into the domestic life of an area that isn't available from the big, national institutions.

We arrived early at the town museum of Aviles, to locked doors. We turned away, happy to return later, but the curator ran after us with the keys in his hands and ushered us back into the museum. I can't tell you how impressed we were. He even offered to give us a guided tour.

Museums come in all shapes and sizes, particularly local ones. Much of the history of Aviles is there to be seen on the streets of the old town, where it belongs. The museum is converted from a beautiful old building, and the modern updates are nicely done. The exhibit that we saw was also thoughtfully put together.

Starting at the top of the building, we worked our way down through the story of the town from its earliest incarnation, reading about its history through text and touchscreen displays. There were some fascinating tidbits about the town's allegiances, both domestic and international, and about its industries and personalities.

The husband and I are writers, so there were all sorts of bits and pieces that went into our notebooks as research.

The people of Aviles are clearly proud of their heritage and this is a clear, modern display of just that.

There was also a nice collection of post-Spanish Civil War photographs that we lingered over for some time, and dioramas of the industrial landscape.

The only thing the museum lacked, if it lacked anything at all, was physical exhibits. This is a living, breathing town, and one that has grown over centuries. The museum's lack of physical exhibits is a testament to the fact that the old town is largely intact and thriving, and the museum is a part of it. So an hour in the museum was well-spent, but five days in the old town was the real highlight of our trip.
