What travellers are saying
- Stephen PMinneapolis, MN1 021 contributionsThis was, I believe, my third visit to Woljeongsa. Almost every time I come to South Korea my hosts arrange a temple stay here. The temple was founded in 643 CE and, like so much of Korea, was bombed to smithereens during the war. It has been beautifully rebuilt with support from the Korean government which facilitates learning about traditional Korean culture by supporting a country-wide temple-stay program where people can stay for several days and learn basic practices of Korean Buddhism: meditation, 108 prostrations to Buddha, the tea ceremony which is used in conversations with monks and demonstrations of the four sacred instruments used in Buddhist worship (large bell, dharma drum, fish and bird). Temple stayers cn also join in the work of the temple.
Actually there are three choices: a day trip temple stay with educational components, longer stays attending the early morning prayers, taking classes and joining in temple work, or recuperative stays where your time is your own and you may participate in other activities as you are moved. Here the tariff is 50,000 Won per night for an individual room, 70,000 won for a shared room inclusive of meals. These are wonderful experiences and I would highly recommend that you give it a try. This is one of the temples designated for temple stays for foreigners and it is a great choice.
The temple has a number of treasures including one of the tallest stupas in Korea dating from the 9th century. It is the only original part of the monastery that survived the war. (Just on the outskirts of the temple complex there is an excellent museum about the temple.) At Songwonsa Temple up the mountain from Woljeongsa there is an 8th century bell that is another of the national treasures of Korea. That temple has a beautiful shrine to Mañjuśri, the wisdom Buddha. You can also have lunch there. There is a 9.2 km hiking trail (among others) that goes to Songwonsa or you can ride the public bus from the bus stop near the main gate for 1500 Won each way. The views from here are beautiful, clear sky or clouds.
From the main gate there is a 1.2 km forest trail that is actually centuries old that loops around the small river next to the temple that makes a very nice morning walk. The trail smoothly graded and perfect for someone in a wheel chair.
One of the greatest masters of Korean Seon (Zen) Buddhism was Hanam who left his body at the end of hostilities in the Korean War in 1951. One of his disciples is the spiritual director of the monks at this monastery, Hyeong-gi Sunim. We have sat for tea with him several times and when he smiles, it is as if the sun comes out. (He also comes to the United States to conduct retreats on the West Coast.)Written 22 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This national park had good nature, some temples and beautiful mountains. My wife and I visited for climbing 2 peak in this area, and there was good for trekking, walking and climbing. We visited Birobong and Noinbong that was main peak in this park, that's very good to us with beautiful view and road. The shortest course was about 13 km for 2 peak, and one was steep and the other was good for trekking.Written 16 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If they're staying here, they should probably go skiing at Yongpyong Resort or riding a cable car that can be enjoyed for 15 minutes once they get on. Especially, I liked the cable car the most. The cable car offers a unique view every four seasons, and you can see a very amazing view when you arrive at the top by cable car, which is the highlight. And in Yongpyeong Resort, there are many things to enjoy, such as karaoke, arcade, convenience store, souvenir shop, virtual reality experience center, and dinosaur park, so honestly, there is no need to go out of the resort. Which special things do you want to enjoy? Then come to Yongpyeong Resort where you can enjoy various things.Written 10 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This temple was located in Odae mountain National park, and apart from entrance of park about 10 km by unpaved road. This temple was one of start point of Odae mountain course. The temple had calm and quiet atmosphere and good view with mountain. Good to rest with calm mood.Written 16 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The slopes are very intermediate and the lines can be long on the weekends when we went. If you’re not skiing their are very minimal options to sit or find a lounge with Wi-Fi unless you want to pay a lot of money. The staff was nice in the ski equipment and return process went smoothly. Only a couple of the slopes were open in December hopefully they get the other half open in January and February. For Korea skiing this is t bad and the prices are reasonable even if the slopes aren’t the most challenging.Written 31 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is easy to access the summit from Yongpyeong Resort by cable car, and at the top, it is good to see the view such as a promenade and skywalk and walk. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the top. It is well organized to enjoy the view slowly and to take a walk.Written 10 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a decent size water park with a variety of pools indoor and outdoor. Plenty of hot tubs at different temperatures, large kids pools, wave pool, lazy river etc. Plus a small food court to grab something to eat. Online one can buy tickets at much reduced prices these days.
Only annoying aspect is the haircover and lifevest that one needs to wear for most pools. Also sunloungers need to be rented so after the entry fee there are a few add ons.Written 25 November 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is really big in space, hosting 7 themed gardens, greenhouse, cafe, restaurant experience room and even accomandation. Loved this place, especially the indoor areas as we visited in autumn. - Lee S43 contributionsThis year's trout fishing started on 30 Dec 2022. You can go there via day tour (Klook) which includes open-air ice fishing or via public transport. The ticket for the day tour includes open air fishing (according to their website, foreigners who wish to book the tent fishing have to call them via phone).
We didn't manage to catch any fish, but like other reviews, a kind hearted local who managed to catch many fish gave them to the children who didn't manage to catch anything. There is no foreigner fishing area as far as I know.
There is a pool whereby participants can take part in the competition where they jumped into the area and tried to catch trout. There is also an indoor area for children to fish.
There are no English instructions on how to get your fish grilled, so you have to ask around or figure out where to go (2nd floor of blue building), and what to do.
(For those who wants to grill your fish, you will have to go to the 2nd floor of the blue building where there is an open area. Enter the room behind the open area.
First join the long queue with the 2 small square windows to pay 4000 KRW to grill your fish, then join the 2nd long queue for the big window to pass your grill ticket and fish to the ladies inside to prepare and wrap into an alumni foil, before passing it to the grilling station (the longish "oven" outside which uses chopped wood) to grill for 15 min (you have to track the time yourself)).
Definitely an eye opener and pretty fun! But do note that the return trip by coach will take 3-4 hours due to peak hour traffic.Written 9 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
