What travellers are saying
- maggie311_99York, PA160 contributionsNot to be missed stunning home. Room after room will leave you speechless. Note to photographers - they do not allow flash and many of the rooms are a bit dark, so be prepared. The tour is self guided and can be downloaded on your phone or they provide written info (in various languages) available when you enter. If you go during the holiday season, the mansion is wonderfully decorated outside as well with lights in addition to the trees etc inside.Written 24 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11 735 contributionsI walked the entire walk; my wife just did the easier parts. Both of us enjoyed it immensely. The north end from Memorial Blvd. to Narragansett Ave. is very easy, suitable for someone in a wheelchair. The area near the other end from Rough Point to The Waves is fairly strenuous, not recommended for anyone with virtually any mobility issues. That said, I am a healthy 73-year-old and had no difficulties.
There are less views of the Newport Mansions than I might have liked but great views of the coast. And there are some very nice mansion views.
We parked on Narragansett Ave. at 40-steps; parking is $2/hr. On the other hand, parking at the south end is very difficult to find and not close to the Cliff Walk.Written 28 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The 14-acre property with its gardens, its folly and all of the fountains and statues is fantastic.
It's hard to believe that this property almost became a shopping center but it seems that only an economic downturn that forced the developer to sell the property to the Preservation Society kept it standing. We would have lost so much!
At 31,401 square feet, it is the 19th largest historic house in the United States and the 3rd largest of Newport's "cottages" behind The Breakers and Ochre Court (now the main administration building for Salve Regina University).Written 21 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We bought the 3 mansion package and we did the Elms, the Marble House and the Breakers. You do need a full day with break for lunch. They all have easy parking and pretty close to each other. Highly recommend it but can get a little pricey when more than a couple of people (families etc.)Written 21 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11 735 contributionsMarble House is not the largest of the Guilded Age Mansions in Newport but we found it to be the most beautiful inside. The decor was certainly over the top bit it went with the house.
Tours are available through the Preservation Society of Newport County. One of the nice things about this place is the beautiful furniture. Virtually all of the original furniture was donated to the Preservation Society by the Prince family (the final private owners).
The Chinese tea house is also worth a visit. It is located at the rear of the property (beside the ocean) and serves tea and snacks. We were a bit disappointed that the snacks were just prepackages sandwiches, muffins, etc. However, we read that they serve better things at other times.Written 16 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Nice views around the drive on a pleasant day. Worth the time.Written 8 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Janine BPebble Beach, CA12 contributionsWe absolutely loved our time at Rough Point. The staff was welcoming and answered any questions as you were allowed to tour the home at your own pace. You could download their app for touring the house and property as well. It was full of the sense of the families who had called this their home. The art, furnishings, displays and the informational signs were terrific. While this is a wonderful mansion, you have the feeling that this was a “home”. Rooms were full and inviting where the other mansion we toured later in the day had been stripped of most furnishing and the rooms used for other displays where windows were covered. Rough Point also had a museum presentation of early furniture that was interesting that was just the right amount to be educational and not detract from experiencing the mansion itself.
The Newport Restoration Foundation has done a fantastic job. It would be first on my list the next time I am in Newport.Written 18 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was disappointing that the fort has fallen into such disrepair and vandalization. I am glad to see that restoration is in full swing. There is a museum on site that is thoughtfully laid out and informative. The views from the top of the fort are nice.Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- 196LindaCMukwonago, WI730 contributionsIn the market for some Rhode Island apparel or seaside decor? This is the place to go for shopping and eating as well as viewing historical buildings and some fun museums like the yachting museum.Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 196LindaCMukwonago, WI730 contributionsThe wharf is full of restaurants and shopping. It is quite a busy place, There was a seafood festival while we were there as well as multiple stops by cruise ships during the week. The views from the end of the pier is breathtaking.Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NorthStar096588373801 contributionPlan on 1.5hrs unless you want to read a majority of the player history exhibits. The exhibits and grounds are historically interesting and if you’re a tennis player or fan you should find it a great place to visit.Written 21 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - roaming_kiwi58Christchurch, New Zealand2 826 contributionsA lovely church with history. JF Kennedy and Jackie Bouvier were married here in 1953. - roaming_kiwi58Christchurch, New Zealand2 826 contributionsIf you are visiting Newport then Bellevue Avenue is a must see. We walked down most of the length of it. It starts with some shops, then becomes a display of opulent private homes. A very interesting display of architecture from the 19th century. Early on summer cottages were built here, but they gradually became large mansions as the wealthy American families started building homes here.Written 8 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11 735 contributionsRosecliff was one of the 4 mansions owned by the Preservation Society of Newport that was open for touring in October. Like the others, it was a beautiful house. The large ballroom was especially impressive. On the other hand, the house was sparsely furnished with none of the original furniture available. The second floor was basically a museum; it currently displayed a tribute to Chinese ties. I did like the gardens quite well. It was a truly wonderful place to tour but still our least favorite of the four.Written 16 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
