What travellers are saying
- REvans62711Hugo, MN45 contributionsWe really enjoyed our visit and tour along with learning this bit of history of FLW. It’s amazing anyone could have let this place go, but glad people have invested the $ and time to restore this treasure. Worth a visitWritten 28 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- DJinNashvilleNashville, TN243 contributionsWhen we had time to kill, we decided to visit the Naval and Military Park--it was close to our hotel. The visit was very interesting with going through 3 different ships, including a submarine. Keep in mind that there are lots of stairs up and down as you're going through the different levels of the ships. But very educational as to what life on a ship looks like. We're glad we visited.Written 22 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- uclatraveler9Santa Barbara, CA1 316 contributionsThe boardwalk seemed very fun, but beware- things close early! We arrived around 5pm on a Monday evening, and the carrousel, gift shop, and ice cream stands were already closed! Maybe Monday is an off day. We were bummed because it seemed like it would have been a great time if things were open.Written 7 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jennifer F88 contributionsThe collection at the AKG is superb! I had not been to AKG for 15 years and the modern collection is inspiring! The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The only detractions were the gift shop, no longer of high quality items, has become dull and sad. And the new building has removed all the lovely views of the Olmsted landscape.Written 24 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - nowpackingDallas, TX3 856 contributionsForest Lawn was established in 1849 and encompasses 269 acres of incredible monuments, which are nestled in a park like setting of rolling hills, small lakes, gorgeous trees and herds of beautiful deer. Much history and interesting stories are waiting to be discovered. Google the names! You never know who you might meet. Highlights included Millard Fillmore, Frank Loyd Wright Memorial and hundreds of intricate monuments.

The room itself is restored after having other uses over the years. I liked it.Written 27 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mary W2 contributionsIt was a rainy day so there were about 40 guests on the tour. Cynthia did an excellent job of presenting and sharing information about City Hall. Her love of the subject and our city certainly came through. Geri kept the group together through all 28 floors of City Hall.Written 6 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ElaineAndGregChesterland, OH3 088 contributionsThis place is a hoot.
Tripadvisor has this as the "Pierce-Arrow Museum," which is certainly its core, but I think it's technically the Buffalo Transport Museum as its somewhat more than just Pierce Arrow cars.
The museum itself is just south of downtown Buffalo. There is free parking out front (really!). Note that there are relatively limited hours as it appears to be staffed largely by volunteers.
The museum itself consists of two large rooms, each about the size of a football field. Keep in mind that around 1900 Buffalo was one of the largest and most prosperous cities in America. Importantly, it is also where, in 1901, President McKinley was assassinated at the World's Fair and Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as the United States' youngest president.
It was in that year that the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company was born. Pierce-Arrow produced luxury cars for a little less than two generations until it finally went out of business late in the Great Depression. During its existence, the company produced luxury cars that were renowned across the world and favorites of US presidents and others, like FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.
There is a lot packed into this museum. The core is the Pierce-Arrow company, as it was based in Buffalo, but there is a lot more. In America, cars are linked with style, culture, and . . . coolness.
You'll see Pierce bicycles and motorcycles, as well as around a dozen Pierce-Arrow cars, including the bullet-proof model for J. Edgar Hoover. There is a lot about women in cars, including style and books. They have multiple Corvettes, a beautiful and outlandish finned Cadillac Eldorado, and many others.
These include some oddities, from our vantagepoint. One is an AMC Hornet used in the movie "The Man With The Golden Gun" by James Bond. It's the one that does the barrel roll over a dilapidated bridge to the unfortunate sound of a slide whistle. How, incidentally, did an AMC car end up in a James Bond movie against Astin Martins, BMWs and other great cars?
Another is the absurd "Motorette" of the post-WWII 1940s, which was endorsed by Bob Hope and looks like an obsolete form of transportation at a Disney Park.
Perhaps the "gem" of the collection is the improbable model service station designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The real thing was never built for reasons that will become obvious. FLW envisioned a kind of homey gas station complete with a living room that included a fireplace for the service station attendants. One can only imagine the likely effect of a wood-burning fireplace in the center of a modern service station and the immediate shutdown for safety reasons. Note the cool hoses coming from the ceiling, however, as well as other cool design elements.
The cars are great, but let's not forget the car culture. There are many, many posters and other cultural images of cars throughout the museums, with everything from posters to board games to clothing. The exhibits include lots of car toys, books (some of the covers are wonderful), advertising, old horns, and a wide range of decorative items. One is an "Elvis" buffalo statue. Another is the car that allegedly inspired "Playboy," which is itself a cool little car, but was also built in Buffalo.
Is this a perfect museum? Oh, no. It's one built by collectors and enthusiasts. The curation is imperfect, but that's just part of the charm.
By the way, the gift shop is great, including lots of antique toys and even old sheet music. We had to force ourselves to put the nostalgic sheet music down even though our piano skills are limited.
Our couple included one who loves cars and one who is indifferent, but both had a lot of fun.Written 8 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. My only issue is the size of the buildings and grounds, On a Hot Summer day, that can be daunting. my personal favourite is the variety of Cacti.Written 24 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - beersteinToronto, Canada27 contributionsWhat a great place to take your family! You can see all the animals as there's plenty and their enclosures aren't so large that it makes it hard to see them. Everything looked well maintained and the staff were very nice.
It's very nice and organized and nothing fancy. Don't go expecting a full day because it's not that large but perfect as part of a larger day.
