Visiting in the fall makes this even better destination. The cool crisp weather is perfect for exploring along the Hudson and the grounds of the property. Excellent destination for insights into important historical and societal developments during a very turbulent era of our country's development. Franklin and Eleanor were an amazing couple and their leadership and influence made a big impact. We enjoyed the tour of the home and the gardens and the visitor center and show is excellent. Regrettably, we did not allow enough time to visit the Presidential Library which I understand is worth an entire visit on its own. Something to return for!

Having missed it during our Spring visit to the Hudson River Valley; we made a point to tour here during our August return stay.
After obtaining our tickets (free if one has a Senior Park Pass); we waited for the tram which brings one to the Home (which is also reached by a fairly easy, and nicely landscaped walk).
The tour was interesting, informative, and provided a greater insight into a truly iconic historical figure. Viewing the final resting place of FDR & Eleanor added an additional gravitas to the experience.
After the tour, we returned to the Welcome Center (again, by tram), and viewed the interesting & insightful film about FDR.
We followed that by some tasty fare from Uncle Sam's Canteen; and then, an exploration of the gift shop.
The bronze of FDR & Eleanor sitting on a bench and greeting visitors, made for a touching conclusion to our visit.
For those of us of "a certain age", FDR was a major influencial figure; as well as for our parents/grandparents. Our visit here, brought many of those memories back.

I went to this home on a Saturday morning in March. This estate is located off of U.S. Route-9. Our tour was small and it was led by a docent. We saw three (3) levels of this house for about seventy-five (75) minutes. The staff members were friendly and informative. This home was huge and very elegant. There were great views of the cliffs and of the Hudson River. There was plenty of free parking on these grounds. A bathroom was only available within the visitors’ center. It cost fifteen dollars ($15.00) to enter this home, but the National Park Pass got us in for free!

We took my brother and sister in law as a birthday weekend. The owner was very informative. We had a great time walking the adorable alpacas and visiting the farm. The gift shop has so many cute things and the alpaca soap is amazing! I wish I had bought more of that! There’s plenty to do for the weekend as Rosevelt’s estate is right in the area, as well as the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park.

I have admired Eleanor Roosevelt always and going to this very personal spot—the only home she chose and owned herself—has long been a goal. My friend and I were extremely fortunate to have our Park Service Guide Dan, passionate about her also as he said. He made this moving experience more so with knowledgeable details about her life, and particularly this spot. It is the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, thanks to her efforts it has endured and will. Fascinating to learn about the workshops at Val-Kill and do not miss the excellent film in what was a workshop.

It can feel hectic, trying to fit in the FDR home, the museum and Eleanor's cottage - but don't overlook this gem. We did each of those (all good) and came back the next morning for this. You ride on a bus a short distance to the cottage built by FDR for a respite and secluded spot. The park guide gave us an overview of the small cottage, but the highlight was a gathering in chairs on the porch as the guide explained who had visited, discussions that took place, and how FDR used it. Almost a "your were there" experience because of the knowledge and wonderful story telling ability of the guide. You will get the same experience because the same guide has been presenting for years.

We were lucky enough to stop by when it was open and we were able to see the displays inside and a train even came by. If the station isn’t open there is a signboard with the history of the station out front.
