What travellers are saying
- betsnowTucson, AZ2 218 contributionsI had not been to the Zoo in years, growing up in SD it was a staple along with annual membership. We came for those adorable Pandas and they did not disappoint! Our visit was first thing in the AM on an off season weekday and that was a win as the park was not crowded at all. We were not only able to hang with the Pandas without feeling rushed but had no trouble seeing any of the other animals who were out and having lovely morning. I ended up buying an annual membership, as it was a smidge cheaper with the free pass that comes with it for me and the Hubs. I love supporting this world class zoo!Written 4 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- John C1 contributionThe USS Midway Museum is an outstanding bit of naval and American history. Not only do you get a feel for what life was like on this massive aircraft carrier, but the flight deck offers unique views of downtown San Diego and the Navy’s active carriers berthed across San Diego Bay at North Island Naval Air Station. But one of the best parts of our recent visit to the ship was docent Steve Droessler, who provided us with a tour that was informative, engaging, and just plain fun. Thanks, Steve, and thanks to the dozens of volunteers who keep CV-41 such a great place to visit.Written 9 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The trails were excellent and took you to stunning views of the coast line. Razor point and Parry Grove trails provide great views and the beach trail is definitely a favorite. - Luv_ Rachmaninoff_No2Irvine, CA988 contributionsWe arrived almost two hours before the sunset and barely managed to find a parking spot. It was very windy & cold, even sand occasionally getting into our eyes. It was all worth the hype since the sunset setting is beautiful, on the cliff. Next time, we will wear warmer clothes & bring blanketsWritten 21 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Known as one of the most scenic train routes in the United States, the Zephyr winds through breathtaking landscapes, from the majestic Rocky Mountains to the arid beauty of the Nevada deserts. The relaxing pace of train travel gave me time to soak in the views and appreciate the unique charm of this cross-country adventure.
Upon arriving in California, one of the highlights of my trip was taking the behind-the-scenes tour of Alcatraz Island. This tour offered a deeper dive into the history and mysteries of the infamous former prison. Unlike the standard tours, the behind-the-scenes experience granted access to areas usually closed to the public, such as hidden tunnels, the prison’s old workshops, and the hospital ward.
The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and brought the stories of Alcatraz to life, sharing fascinating anecdotes about its most notorious inmates and the daring escape attempts that have captivated imaginations for decades. Walking through the dimly lit corridors and seeing the cells up close was both eerie and enlightening. It gave me a newfound respect for the challenges faced by those who lived and worked on the island.
What stood out most to me was learning about the island’s broader history, including its time as a military fortress and its significance to Native American activists during the occupation in the late 1960s. The layers of history made the visit even more enriching.
I would highly recommend the Alcatraz behind-the-scenes tour to anyone visiting San Francisco. It’s an unforgettable experience that combines history, intrigue, and stunning views of the Bay Area. Pairing this tour with the scenic Zephyr train ride made for a truly memorable adventure.Written 15 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's really a good spot for pictures. - Barbara LCoral Cove, Australia854 contributionsWe stopped off at Little Italy for lunch. Oh dear .. there are so many wonderful restaurants that it was a difficult choice to make. You could spend a few hours wandering the streets but the main street is India Street with it all.
