Our family loved our few hours snorkeling here!! We got to this area via people power - we kayak’ed through a local company along with a guide. I don’t think I’d ever seen such a variety of sea life in one small spot. Just incredible. As a side benefit, our guide gave us some historical background on the cliffs and structures in the area. What an afternoon!!

So interesting! I love living history farms and, even though this is small, it was exceptional. The staff were very engaging and informative. Highly recommended.

This review covers hiking and snorkeling.

The hike is 1400 ft down and back up. It is just under 2 mi each direction to the monument. There is about a 1 mile stretch that is very exposed with no shade. Our group took 45 minutes down and 1hr 10 minutes up. On the way up the section between markers 6 and 4 is the toughest. The elevation gain is fairly steady throughout but the heat really ups the challenge. The trail surface is dusty and loose rock. Best suited for closed toes sneakers. We brought one liter of water each which was just enough.

There is a feisty and fat gang of mongoose who are ready to steal your lunch. They will unzip your pack to liberate your snacks. We did note they left our neighbors fruits and veggies alone in favor of higher value foods. We used bag straps to hang out bags from the metal posts near the monument and either they can't climb that or opted for easier marks. Our snacks were safe.

The best entrance is straight off the wall and of you have the upper body strength this is also the easiest exit. Otherwise there is a rocky area to the left of the monument (when facing the ocean) that you can also use to get out.

We hemmed and hawed about this one. Here's where I land : even as experienced hikers and runners the 1400 ft of elevation gain over 2 miles in the hot sun was either no big deal or brutal depending on the individual. Bring enough water and wear real shoes (not flip flops) . Not an ideal first snorkel. But otherwise it's pretty manageable and the views are gorgeous. The snorkeling is great but it's also really crowded. There were consistently 5+ boats + people who hiked in. You'll see similar stuff with less company at other spots.

We visited this little church after the hike to Kealakekua Bay. The drive to the church was beautiful with mangoes on the road from big mango trees by the road. Also gorgeous trumpet bushes. The church is very beautiful. We were lucky that it was not busy and it felt so serene and peaceful.

This is a very good snorkeling spot - with a few caveats.

    1. Go early. It starts to get hot and crowded later in the day. Hot lava rock is not good for bare feet.
    2. Know your equipment and skill level. I wouldn't recommend this for an inexperienced swimmer or snorkeler. Know what you are doing or go to a regular snorkel beach.
    3. Don't plan to stay the whole day. There are so many other good places to hang out on the island. Swim and snorkel here, but find a nice sandy swimming beach for the afternoon.

I like two step a lot, but it is one of my morning swim/snorkel spots on the big island that should be enjoyed in moderation.

Great place to see local plants. People are very friendly. Grounds are in excellent shape. You can walk through in about 2 hours and see everything, it is not overwhelming. The grounds are hilly, so bring some water to drink.

This is a hidden gem! Awesome coffee and a heavenly view! The owner Bill is such a kind guy and is super talented! He farms his own coffee beans, macadamia nuts and is a professional potter. Do miss this place. It's just off the road, then take an immediate left. Amazing place!

The previous reviews are very informative and provide comprehensive information about this hike. Additionally, I would advise organizing the day so that you climb up at the end of the day when it's not as hot, but still reach the parking lot before dark. The way uphill for a young, well-fitted person will take approximately an hour. For others, it may take up to two hours.

This is one of the coffer farms in the area and we'll worth visiting. Good information about coffee, free samples, and you can take a short walk through a lava tube!

According to signs, the garden is now operated by the community and is open on specified days of the week. We attended on a Friday and enjoyed our time. A self-guided tour is available, but we are not technologically proficient, so we just wandered around and read the signs. Two men, who were laboring in the garden, approached us and offered assistance. They were very pleasant -- good ambassadors. The garden commendably focuses on historical uses of plants by local peoples and does not focus on "entertainment" as much as on education. When we visited, admission was free, but donations are encouraged -- which are very worth making.

Amazing experience - FREE tour and then we opted for a tasting. About $12 or so for three coffee choices. Lovely tour guide who was so friendly and knowledgeable. It wasn't very busy the day we went so we had our own private tour. Couldn't recommend them enough.
