- SH911 contributionJust wanted to say a huge thank you to Matthew who made our son’s Birthday party run so smoothly. Matthew was very helpful and accommodating and we can’t thank him enough for making us feel comfortable and happy! If you book a party at Pensthorpe, full use of the reserve for the rest of the day is included in the price, which was brilliant because it meant that we could enjoy everything on offer after the party. Adults attending with party children pay half price for their tickets which is amazing considering there’s so much on offer.
When we tried to access the reserve, we explained that we were the party booking and one of the members of staff at the admissions desk firstly asked me whose party it was, so I explained it was my son’s birthday party. She then said she didn’t think we’d have full access to the reserve, so I explained that this is included in the party package. I do not mind that there was some confusion on her part over what was included in the package because I understand that these things happen. She also mentioned that the information regarding parties had recently changed. From my perspective, she seemed confused - so I explained what was offered as part of the party package. She said she’d have to call Matthew to make sure this information was correct. I understand that she just wanted to clarify this with him, but her tone and manner in doing so made me feel as though she thought I was trying to access the reserve without paying (even though I already had). I asked her if we’d upset her because I felt she seemed annoyed. She then explained that she wasn’t upset, but that she needed to put it through on her system. I wasn’t going to mention this but then I thought it could be useful information for future party bookings. Perhaps more clarity is needed for staff as to what is included in the party package. When we first arrived for the party, the same member of staff also told us she wasn’t aware that there were any parties that day. Maybe wristbands could be given to party children before they go into the party (who intend to stay for the remainder of the day) so that there isn’t confusion as to why they’re there. This really isn’t a complaint because we had a fantastic party and the staff member was perhaps feeling stressed because she wasn’t sure what was going on. I understand that sometimes there’s confusion so hopefully this information will help! I also appreciate that sometimes when people feel stressed/under pressure it can be harder to sustain a friendly manner. Maybe we caught her on a particularly difficult day and we all have bad days! We all had an incredible time and a huge thank you again to Matthew who also very generously charged us for ten children (when we had twelve attending) because of the wet weather! Thank you for making it a wonderful experience for my son and his friends. I’d wholeheartedly recommend a party here!Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Loved the new raptor viewing point and saw a buzzard and something I couldn’t identify (new to birdwatching so learning). Other visitors were always willing to help with identification and it’s always a very friendly place to be.Written 7 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - William RManchester, UK318 contributionsWow! Fakenham racecourse. You are the best! My wife and I visited this course on 15th March 2024. Before I start, let me make clear that we have visited 35 UK racecourses and also Longchamp in France and one racecourse in Mauritius. So, I think I’m reasonably qualified to comment on racecourses. The whole Aura around this course is one of relaxation. We were visiting in our Campervan, and from the second we pulled up at the stewards who “asked” (I’ll come to that word later) us to park our van in the dedicated parking area (until we could take our pitch after the races) until the second we left the site we experienced EVERY single member of staff, security etc very polite and helpful. Allow me to break for a second…Racegoers… if you like York Races or Haydock etc you will not like Fakenham Races. This place is the exact opposite. A lovely, countryside course with staff that actually smile and appear to be happy whilst working. Have to say the very helpful Amanda (Email) deserves as much credit as the face to face staff. Her fast emailed responses are spot on… can’t fault her or any of the admin team. Facilities for campers are some of the best we’ve encountered anywhere. Now… I’m gonna break again… Somebody at Fakenham Races has a good business brain…because…in putting 7 staff on the main bar, we were served in less than 5 minutes every time… Take note… Market Rasen, Newcastle, York, Haydock, Aintree who put on 3 agency staff with no idea, enthusiasm or bother… most times you just walk away without buying a beer. Not at Fakenham, served quickly means more sales for them, no frustration for customers. Fakenham have got it spot on. The week before this meeting we went to Exeter and Hereford… both courses 20% more expensive for a pint of P*** served by agency staff who didn’t give a ****. Totally different at Fakenham. I could go on and on but I’m running out of superlatives for Fakenham and its staff. Add in the beautiful River Wensum 5 minutes walk away, the town with 5 pubs 15 minutes walk away, the onsite club and you can’t go far wrong. We’ve just booked for the June meeting and told all our camper friends. Being British I just have to complain about something…We didn’t back a winner on the horses and that noise of the birds singing loudly when the Sun comes up we’re just not used to…So, the final bit (which I said I’d come back to). No arrogant security, no stuffy stewards and no stupid rules where you can/can’t stand or can/can’t watch the race with a beer.
FAKENHAM RACE STAFF… Please change nothing. Raise a glass with us. Thank you guys.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Limited hours (Thursday and Friday 10.00 to 13.00 at the moment); run entirely by volunteers who are very knowledgeable and helpful. Watched the video first and then walked around the small site. Discussed the machinery and working conditions with a volunteer, who explained the impact of the work on the health of the men who often suffered from lung cancer and various other cancers due to the polluted conditions. Recognised my mum’s and granny’s gas fires amongst those in display. The exterior of the museum is rather understated when viewed from the road but well worth a visit. It is free to enter but we were happy to put a generous donation in the donation box as we feel it is important to keep this piece of industrial heritage alive, especially as it is the only remaining town gas site remaining in the UK.Written 22 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris AFakenham, England, United Kingdom197 contributionsThis is a wonderful private estate in stunning grounds. The grounds have a beautiful church and lots of lovely walks. Not really touched in the same way that national trust etc manage properties so it is far more real and fun! Great concerts held here too.Written 24 February 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Holly DollyLondon, UK269 contributionsWe were staying local to here so popped in on our way to somewhere else. I am a sucker for a photo when it comes to old buildings and landscapes so when I saw this advertised I knew we would be visiting.
The ruins is only very small but that is what is so beautiful about it, there are a number of signs detailing the different parts and different ages of the abbey which one stood here. We enjoyed our time at the abbey and are glad we went.
For any keen photographer this is a must.Written 23 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It won't take up a day but is worth visiting for anyone with an interest in the RAF or the local area history. Being on the actual airfield site adds to the atmosphere. Very keen and helpful folk on hand.Written 26 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- 28jess2017Hertfordshire, UK26 contributionsWe had Sunday lunch here whilst staying in our caravan, always lovely and very helpful staff.
Friday nights are now a family night, with two course dinner for £15 for adults, but if you have children with you, adult and a child’s meal is £15. Games are also proved for children to play with.

- Kate E2 contributionsImpromptu visit because of the weather and it was incredible. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The 45 minute demonstration was excellent and thoroughly informative. We all loved making our own piece of glassware -which is then posted if you can’t stay around. A great couple of hours with highly skilled glassmakers!Written 21 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - thedoggroomerUkuk79 contributionsVisited this morning for the first time and had not read previous negative reviews but the ‘old’ lady may have. We had a lovely chat and the chapel is a treasure trove. I bought something which I love.
