As well as a very long sandy beach it's well worth finding the time to explore the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park, visit an hour before sunset for best chance to see kangaroos up close.
Sand is firm enough to drive on (you'll need $6 cash for vehicle access but free for pedestrian access and a large car park close by), safe for kids and just beautiful.
