- TonderaiMatandaHarare, Zimbabwe153 contributionsWe enjoyed an exhilarating cruise on Lake Kariba over three nights, sailing on Houseboat Sundowner across the Lake to Hydro Bay against the backdrop of the Matusadonha mountains, into the Sanyati Gorge, then to Changa, then to Antelope Island, before finishing off the tour in Kariba at Andora Harbour.
Our Sundowner Experience started with a flawless booking process through Sylvia and Ceri at Rhino Rendezvous. I cannot thank them enough for their guidance and knowledge and this could not have been possible without them. Through them, we booked transfer from Harare for our group of 11 on a bus charter from Hersov Tours. Abel drove us safely and took us to all our mini tour destinations on land without hassle.
Houseboat Sundowner itself was the main event. It is a mixture of ruggedness, charm, and luxury. The Sundowner was made even more special by the crew of Lovemore the Skipper, Joe the Cook, and James the deck hand. Together, these three gave us a memorable trip that will endure in memory for a lifetime.
Lovemore knows the lake like the back of his hand. He navigates without a compass, and is deeply knowledgeable about the channels, expertly rounding the dead trees. He took our group of novice fishers and turned them into confident ones. He also has a contagious smile and laugh.
Joe fed us with a wonderful assemblage of delicious treats and meals, and we were delighted to try his own signature hot sauce. He was often hard at work in the kitchen while we were having fun, and this could not have been easy in the Kariba heat!
James was also an amazing deck hand. He cleaned with an efficiency that is unique and made sure that our living area on the top deck and our cabins were always spick and span.
We had the two pontoon tender boats to go fishing and game viewing. We encountered more hippos than you can imagine, crocodiles, elephants, including some huge tuskers, antelope, waterbuck, and lots of colourful birds such as cormorants, darters, pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, yellow-billed storks, and plenty more.
Above all, we saw the most remarkable sunrises and sunsets on the lake, and wow, did these impress! We were up each morning to catch the sunrise, and without fail, stopped to gaze at another sunset.
Sundowner was a really special privilege to experience.Written 12 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's a great chance to experience the widest expanse of the lake without getting on the water. It would be a great place to take in a sunset with a view. The ladies at the curio market right next to the view can be a bit overwhelming with their insistence to buy their wares once you visit their stalls. They will not, however, in my experience, disturb you when you are looking over the water.
There is also a sculpture called Kariba Waves by a local artist, and a memorial to Operation Noah - the rescue operation for animals who were stranded as the lake levels rose after Kariba Dam was completed.Written 23 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Captain Godrey and his team consisting Pilot, Chef Takesure and Silas made our stay comfortable and easy. The food was flavourful and filling. You couldn’t say no to Chef Takesure’s meals. Silas kept our cooler box ready every day because he knew we loved our drinks cold and first thing in the morning. Pilot and Captain Godfrey took us to amazing views, magical sunset cruises and helped me find all the crocodiles I was looking for.
